Sometimes we think that Cary Grant should only have been cast in screwball comedies, so good was he when it came to timing and physical humor. In this film, directed by Howard Hawks (who had previously paired with Grant on Bringing Up Baby and His Girl Friday), Grant plays a French soldier who falls in love with an American female naval reserve officer. Near film’s end, through various plot machinations, he is forced to pass as a “war bride.” This involves wearing a wig made out of the coarse hair from a horse’s tail. And that’s it. He looks completely ludicrous. He looks like Cary Grant with a terrible wig on. There’s no way he could ever pass as a woman. We love it anyway.
