The scrappy heroine in Quentin Tarantino’s delirious genre-mashup universe of schoolgirl killers, kitchen knife fights, and organizations like the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad, is a lanky blonde who knows something about samurai swords and looks good in a yellow tracksuit. Her story goes something like this: After spending four years in a coma, the Bride is looking to hunt down and kill the men and women who kinda ruined her wedding day and left her to die (said men and women being members of the Deadly Vipers, a criminal enterprise to which, we learn, The Bride once belonged). The 2-part series, which plays out in flashbacks and a hodgepodge of visual themes, is a sprawling and jittery revenge fantasy anchored by terrific set-pieces that showcase The Bride’s murderous talents, perhaps most memorably in her Tokyo nightclub skirmish against a swarm of masked yakuza.
