U2’s “New Year’s Day” doesn’t actually include the Jan. 1 date in its lyrics; for that, we go to Millie Jackson’s underappreciated 1974 concept album Caught Up. In a crass and frankly humorous rap in the middle of her take on the cheating song “(If Lovin’ You Is Wrong) I Don’t Want to Be Right,” she explains in great detail how, after permitting the guy she’s cheating with to spend the Christmas holiday season with his family, she anxiously awaits his inevitable return to her on “J-1.”
