The first title in the sci-fi third-person-shooter series held top honors as the most popular multiplayer game on Microsoft’s Xbox Live service until Halo 3 debuted and took back the top spot (which Gears of War had stolen from Halo 2 in the first place).
The franchise has been expanded into multiple books, a graphic novel, and we may or may not eventually see a Gears of War feature film from New Line Cinema—the studio purchased the rights to make a Gears of War movie that was supposed to come out last year but has gotten held up.
