Depending on how you look at it, the final scene in 1967’s The Graduate is either the best wedding or the worst wedding imaginable. Yes, Benjamin (Dustin Hoffman) interrupts a wedding service, beats up several of the guests, locks them in the church by barring the door with a giant cross and runs off with the bride. (Also, earlier in the film, he sleeps with the bride’s mother). But he loves Elaine (the bride), and isn’t that what marriage is all about? The Graduate ends as Benjamin and Elaine escape town on a bus. You don’t know if their romance works out. They could live happily ever after or Elaine could get off at the next stop. Their lives are undetermined. Just like ours.
