The Notorious B.I.G. was obsessed with his own mortality. The rapper’s 1994 debut was titled Ready to Die, and his magnum opus, 1997’s Life After Death, was released 15 days after Biggie was killed in a Los Angeles drive-by shooting. But Biggie’s true posthumous album was 1999’s Born Again, which fleshed out unfinished material from Biggie’s last recording sessions with appearances from a series of guest rappers. Despite mixed reviews, the album sold 3 million copies. A 2005 remix album with a similar theme, Duets: The Final Chapter was an unmitigated flop.
