“If you build it, dead people will come.” Wait, that’s not totally right, but that’s the essence of this 1989 baseball classic. The plot line is, by now, well known: Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella starts getting eerie whisperings about building … something. At first, he has no idea what, but soon discovers that his life’s work is to carve a baseball diamond out of his cornfield. And when he does, the dead folks arrive. Old baseball players from long ago, that is, who turn up to play pickup games in Kinsella’s backyard. (This summer, the real-life field of dreams, located in Dyersville, Iowa, popped up in the news when it was revealed that the property was up for sale.)
