Britton (and Chandler) got some well-earned FNL love. / NBC
Joel McHale and Sofia Vergara revealed the nominations for the 2010 primetime Emmy Awards this morning. And while TV critics’ complaining about award nominations is as tired a ritual as sweeps stuntcasting, this time out the list was… well, surprisingly defensible.
On the comedy side, it was a big year for new series Modern Family and Glee (sorry, Community and Parks and Recreation, however), suggesting a showdown in that category; on the drama side, Lost picked up a pile of nominations for its last season, along with repeat faves like Mad Men and Breaking Bad—but Emmy found some love for Friday Night Lights as well. (Not as best drama series, though; underdog stories have their limits.) And the Academy made a not-so-subtle Team Coco statement.
I’ve already written about my own preferences, so I won’t rehash those. (You can see the following posts for the choices I personally would have made in the drama actress, drama actor, comedy actress, comedy actor and best comedy and drama categories.) There are a number of nominations I’d have liked but honestly fell into the wishful-thinking category: Treme in best drama or Zach Gilford for supporting actor, for instance. Within the realm of actual realistic possibility, Emmy did make some good and surprising choices, so let’s look at those:
* As mentioned above, FNL got recognition, if not as much as it deserves, with Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton earning nominations in the lead actor and actress categories.
* In the comedy, variety or musical category, Emmy gave a nomination to the attenuated season of The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien—and not to certain other late-night shows which were also submitted for consideration. (The live audience reacted with a surprised murmur to that one.)
* Besides the cable critics’ darlings, Emmy also spread around recognition for the best new broadcast network drama of the season, The Good Wife—not on my dream list for best drama, but a strong example of a broadcast legal drama with ambitions beyond the case of the week. (Though it’s very good at cases of the week, too.) But unfortunate that FX dramas Sons of Anarchy and Justified largely got hosed. (I’d have swapped either for Dexter, despite strong acting perfomances from Michael C. Hall and John Lithgow this season.)
* OK, now a complaint: Emmy rewarded the wrong half of NBC’s Thursday night, slighting the superior Community and Parks and Recreation (excepting Amy Poehler’s nod) in favor of coasting-on-momentum nominations for 30 Rock and The Office. On the other hand, I was oddly happy to see Nurse Jackie get recognized—even though I wouldn’t put it in my top six personally, season two was very strong, and I think it’s a critically underrated show.
* Finally, just a few of the acting nominations I was glad to see: Chris Colfer and Mike O’Malley (among many, many others for Glee), Christina Hendricks (not getting overshadowed by her Mad Men costars), Aaron Paul in Breaking Bad, a raft of deserving final-season Lost acting nominations (Matthew Fox, Terry O’Quinn, Michael Emerson and Elizabeth Mitchell) and Archie Panjabi and Dylan Baker for The Good Wife.
