Known as Escape to Victory outside the U.S., this rum romp was helmed by John Huston as the likes of Michael Caine, Max von Sydow, Sylvester Stallone and the ubiquitous Pelé took on the Nazis. The stellar cast (made up of actors and well-known soccer players) portray POWs at a German prison camp who take up the challenge of playing the enemy on the soccer field. Of course, things aren’t what they seem; the Germans are unaware that the prisoners are planning their escape. The entire premise is ridiculous, but the sight of Stallone in goal makes it all worthwhile. No public holiday in the U.K. is complete without this movie being screened on television.
