An American version, in which Jimmy Fallon wins over Drew Barrymore with his irrational love of the Boston Red Sox, would come many years after this adaptation of Nick Hornby’s seminal soccer text. Colin Firth plays Paul, an English teacher who loves Arsenal unconditionally (his support for the London club is couched in relationship issues with his father so fraught that Freud would have had a field day), but when he starts seeing fellow teacher Sarah (Ruth Gemmell), obvious conflicts arise. While never living up to the heady heights of the source material, the film does tease out the comedic elements while capturing the highs and lows involved in balancing the twin demands of sports and relationships.
