Because you should always endeavor to do exactly what I’m doing, this would be a good time to go back and re-watch Lost’s pilot in preparation for the season debut next Tuesday.

You can have plenty of fun looking back and seeing, in retrospect, how much foreshadowing there is in those two hours (say, Locke’s speech to Walt about the black and white pieces on the backgammon board)—even if some of that foreshadowing is reverse-engineered.

But it’s also just great to watch as a piece of visual storytelling. Seeing the pilot again, I was impressed with how the opening gives us one piece of visual information at a time, some of them dissonant or jarring, until we, with Jack, get a sense of our bearings. An eye (someone is regaining consciousness). A grove of bamboo (we’re in a jungle). A wound and tears in his suit (he’s hurt). A mini-vodka bottle (he’s been drinking). A dog (what the—?). The man running (it’s an emergency). A beach (we’re by the ocean). Screams (it’s a big emergency). Pan to the plane wreckage—and we’re off.

But your collective eyes are sharper than mine, so if you re-watch—or already have recently—let us know what you’ve noticed that we should be paying attention to.
