(LOS ANGELES) — Joyce Brothers, the pop psychologist who pioneered the television advice show in the 1950s and enjoyed a long and prolific career as a syndicated columnist, author, and television and film personality, has died. She was 85. Brothers died Monday in New York City, according to her longtime publicist, Sanford Brokaw. The cause of death was not immediately made public. Brothers first gained fame on a game show and went on to publish 15 books and make cameo appearances on popular shows including “Happy Days” and “The Simpsons.” She visited Johnny Carson on “The Tonight Show” nearly 100 times. The way Brothers liked to tell it, her multimedia career came about “because we were hungry.” (MORE: Woman of Letters) It was 1955. Her husband, Milton Brothers, was still in medical school and Brothers had just given up her teaching positions at Hunter College and Columbia University to be home with her newborn, firmly believing a child’s development depended on it. But the young family found itself struggling on her husband’s residency income. So Brothers came up with the idea of entering a television quiz show as a contestant. “The $64,000 Question” quizzed contestants in their chosen area of expertise. She memorized 20 volumes of a boxing encyclopedia — and, with that as her subject, became the only woman and the second person to ever win the show’s top prize. Brothers tried her luck again on the superseding “$64,000 Challenge,” answering each question correctly and earning the dubious distinction as one of the biggest winners in the history of television quiz shows. She later denied any knowledge of cheating, and during a 1959 hearing in the quiz show scandal, a producer exonerated her of involvement. Her celebrity opened up doors. In 1956, she became co-host of “Sports Showcast” and frequently appeared on talk shows. Two years later, NBC offered her a trial on an afternoon television program in which she advised on love, marriage, sex and child-rearing. Its success led to a nationally telecast program, and subsequent late-night shows that

(NEWARK, N.J.) — Grammy-winning singer Lauryn Hill was sentenced Monday to three months in prison and an additional three months in home confinement for failing to pay taxes on about $1 million in earnings. Hill, a 37-year-old South Orange resident, pleaded guilty last year in the case. During a forceful statement to the judge Monday, Hill explained she had always meant to eventually pay the taxes but was unable to during a period of time when she dropped out of the music business, echoing a defense she wrote last year in a long post online. “I needed to be able to earn so I could pay my taxes, without compromising the health and welfare of my children, and I was being denied that,” Hill said Monday, without explaining what exactly triggered her actions. Before the sentencing, her attorney had said Hill had paid more than $970,000 to satisfy the state and federal tax liabilities. Hill had faced a maximum sentence of one year each on three counts. Her attorney had sought probation. It’s not clear when or where she’d report to prison. Hill got her start with The Fugees and began her solo career in 1998 with the critically acclaimed album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.” She then largely disappeared from public view to raise her six children, five of whom she had with Rohan Marley, the son of reggae singer Bob Marley. At the time of her arrest last year, Hill wrote a criticism rejecting pop culture’s “climate of hostility, false entitlement, manipulation, racial prejudice, sexism and ageism.” “Over-commercialization and its resulting restrictions and limitations can be very damaging and distorting to the inherent nature of the individual,” Hill wrote. “I did not deliberately abandon my fans, nor did I deliberately abandon any responsibilities, but I did however put my safety, health and freedom and the freedom, safety and health of my family first over all other material concerns! I also embraced my right to resist a system intentionally opposing my right to whole and integral survival.” She also said she

Hollywood’s casting directors have had a busy week—and it’s only Wednesday! Here are some of exciting recent casting tidbits from the world of movies and television: Colin Firth and Emma Stone have been cast as the stars of the next Wood Allen movie, which will begin filming in France this summer. (via Associated Press) Natalie Portman and Michael Fassbender have been cast as Lady MacBeth and her ill-fated hubby in an upcoming film version of Shakespeare’s Scottish play. The movie shoots later this year, produced by the team that brought us The King’s Speech and Shame, and will reportedly include lots of fighting scenes. (via Screen Daily) The cast of Downton Abbey has a lot going for it, but until now diversity has not been one of those things. This morning, news broke that the British drama—which has now gotten from 1912 to the early 1920s—has cast its first black character, a jazz singer who will be played by Gary Carr. The actor, 26, may be known to British TV audiences from his work on Death in Paradise. (via the Telegraph) Speaking of Downton: the actress Lily James—known to DA fans as the rambunctious cousin Rose—has been cast as Cinderella in the upcoming live-action Disney movie of the classic fairy tale. The movie will be directed by Kenneth Branagh and also star Cate Blanchett as the evil stepmother. (via The Hollywood Reporter) Despicable Don? Mad Men star Jon Hamm will voice the lead role in the next Despicable Me movie, Minions. The movie’s slated for release in December of 2014. (via Deadline) Jamie Foxx is in talks to sign on for the starring grown-up role in the Quvenzhané Wallis adaptation of Annie that Will Smith and Jay-Z are producing. But with a few tweaks: instead of being called Daddy Warbucks, he would be called Benjamin Stacks. Grantland has a detailed run-down of the etymology of the name, if you don’t get it. (via The Hollywood Reporter) And in the category of rumors, the big casting-news-that-might-be is that Allison Williams of Girls, who was recently cast in the Shakespeare-y Rosaline (presumably a movie about Romeo’s ex), is

(LOS ANGELES) — Millions, and possibly billions, of dollars are at stake in a civil trial starting Monday over allegations from Michael Jackson’s mother that the company promoting his comeback failed to properly investigate the doctor convicted in his death. Katherine Jackson, her son Randy and daughter Rebbie came to court as attorneys prepared to deliver opening statements. Outside the courthouse, a large contingent of news media awaited developments. Two people won a lottery for the only seats in the tiny courtroom that were available to the general public. Jurors will listen to remarks from attorneys who hope to frame the issues before testimony begins in the months-long trial. (MORE: Bad 25: Spike Lee Brings Michael Jackson Back to Thrilling Life) Lawyers for concert giant AEG Live contend the company did nothing wrong and could not have foreseen the circumstances that led to Jackson’s death in June 2009 at age 50. The case will focus on the last few months of Jackson’s life and his overall health and financial history. Jurors will also hear evidence throughout the case about Conrad Murray, the former cardiologist convicted in 2011 of involuntary manslaughter after giving Jackson doses of the powerful anesthetic propofol as a sleep aid. Any award in the case will be determined by a jury of six men and six women who have agreed to hear the case, which may last 90 days. Lawyers for Katherine Jackson and the singer’s three children have said AEG failed to spot red flags about Murray’s finances and created a conflict of interest for him between a major payday and maintaining the superstar’s health. Murray agreed to serve as Jackson’s doctor for the planned series of “This Is It” comeback shows in London for $150,000 per month, but Jackson died before the superstar and AEG officials signed the agreement. AEG contends it did not hire Murray, who had previously treated Jackson and who the singer requested serve as his physician. Murray remains jailed and is appealing his conviction. The trial will address issues about Jackson’s
