It’s been a year of transition for Matisyahu. Since the beginning of 2011 he’s gone from being primarily known for his blistering, rock-influenced live reggae shows to the man behind the global pop anthem ‘One Day’ — NBC’s official song of the Vancouver Olympics. He’s left behind the Hasidic Jewish enclave of Crown Heights, Brooklyn, and moved to Los Angeles. And most significantly, he’s shaved off his trademark beard and forelocks and distanced himself from the religion that once helped define him. Now, he’s back with a new album, Spark Seeker, out July 17 — a sleek, pop-influenced collection of tracks produced by Kook Kojak (Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj) and recorded in Los Angeles and Israel. He talked to TIME about the album, his faith and how he defines himself now. TIME: Let’s talk a little bit about the album first. This is a bit of a departure for you. I tend to look at it as an evolution. I think my music has always been a mixture, depending on whom I’m working with — what band, what musicians, what producer. This record definitely has more of a sort of pop, urban hip-hop kind of feel to it, mixed with a world music vibe because we recorded in Israel and got a lot of Middle Eastern sounds from over there. You worked with producer Kool Kojak on Spark Seeker, who’s also worked with Nicki Minaj and Ke$ha. How did that partnership come about? A friend of ours hooked us up just to try writing together, and we wrote ‘Sunshine’ in one day. That kind of kicked it off. Every time I’d be back in L.A. we’d work on more music together and before we knew it we had half a record. Your fans have definitely gotten used to hearing a certain, rootsier sound from you. Have you gotten a sense of what their reaction to the new stuff is going to be yet? I think it’s going to be good. I mean the last song I put out, ‘One Day,’ had a very

Go ahead: name another Jewish reggae singer from suburban New York who’s had a busier couple years than Matisyahu. In 2010, his anthemic single “One Day”, featuring Akon, was picked as NBC’s official song of the Vancouver Winter Olympics. The following December, however, the singer shocked his twitter followers by sending out a picture of himself after shaving off his signature beard and forelocks. “No more Chassidic reggae superstar,” he later wrote in a blog post. He’s now decamped from the traditional Hasidic community in Brooklyn where he’s spent the past decade and moved his family to Los Angeles. He’s also recorded a new album, Spark Seeker, produced by Kool Kojak (Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj) — a sleek, pop-influenced collection of tracks that marks a natural progression after his earthy, jam band-influenced live shows and the crossover success of “One Day”. “I think my music has always been a mixture,” Matisyahu tells TIME in an interview. “This record has definitely more of a pop, urban hip-hop kind of feel, mixed with a world music vibe because we recorded in Israel and got a lot of Middle Eastern sounds from over there.” (LIST: The Hippest Songs for Hanukkah) The new track “Crossroads”, which you can hear exclusively on TIME.com above, is a departure for Matis as well. His hyperactive dancehall flow from earlier songs like “King Without a Crown” and “Youth” has been slowed down and juiced up, courtesy of Kool Kojak, into something that sounds like the deep roar of a Flo Rida chorus — a lot more South Beach than Trench Town. Perhaps to remind listeners that this is the same guy who performed with Phish in a black frock coat and fedora, however, the song features plenty of spiritual touches, like the religious chants that open the track. “Working with Kojak, his feel for rhythm and groove and just the drum sounds in particular, it’s just the kind of stuff I listened to in the ’90s — growing up and listening to hip-hop and that whole vibe. We come from a similar place, taste-wise,” Matisyahu says.
He’s more than just a hat and a pair of shades. The legendary lead guitarist for Guns N’ Roses and Velvet Revolver has a new album out, titled Apocalyptic Love, with new band Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators. He sat down to talk to TIME about life as a hard-rocking family man, his signature hat and why he doesn’t talk to Axl Rose. Watch the video above for the interview, or read below for some excerpts: You’ve worked with a bunch of lead singers over the years: Axl Rose in Guns N’ Roses, Scott Weiland in Velvet Revolver and now Myles Kennedy, with the Conspirators. Did you ever at one point say, I’m just going to do this lead singing thing myself? I hate singing. I just don’t enjoy it. There’s been a couple times where trying to find somebody to front a project has just been difficult and I thought well, God, I’ll just do it myself. But I just don’t want to. I don’t like doing it. I don’t even like humming to myself. In 2009, TIME magazine came up with a list of the top 10 guitar players, and you were ranked second, behind Hendrix. The citation read, in part, “Does he make the cut partially because of the hat? Yes. Yes he does.” Tell us about the hat. The hat, it’s funny. It’s become something that is hugely recognized. It was just a hat that I’d picked up back in 1985 or 1986 and I saw it in a store window and I thought, well, that’s cool. I wore it that night at a show and over time it just became one of the most identifiable features as far as my look was concerned. (READ: Guns N’ Rose: Metal Misfits) Ever lose the hat? I had a couple stolen. I had one stolen and I got it back because the guy who stole it was dumb enough to try to sell it on eBay, and I had another one stolen in a bar that I passed out
