The life of a film composer isn’t all Jaws themes and Imperial Marches. It’s an often-solitary calling that involves a lot of decidedly non-musical stress, where every hour on the piano is met by two hours sorting out productions logistics, sending emails, and struggling to meeting deadlines. All for an endeavor that, if you’re lucky, a few people will remember as they leave the theater. Joseph Trapanese doesn’t mind. In fact, the classically trained composer/arranger/producer—who worked on the soundtrack for the sci-fi thriller Oblivion—takes special pride in film reviews that make no mention of his work. “There’s a great quote from Futurama, ‘If you do your job right, no one will be sure if you’re doing anything at all,’” Trapanese says. “That’s the secret to film composing.” Oblivion, which opened last Friday, stars Tom Cruise as Jack Harper, a space-colony repairman who makes routine visits to a now-barren Earth, long ago ravaged by an invading alien race. It’s a CGI-heavy visual feast—with incredible post-apocalyptic landscapes and impressive depictions of 2077 technology—that called for an equally epic score. The movie is the baby of architect-turned-director Joseph Kosinski, who wrote the first treatment for Oblivion, an adaptation of his unpublished graphic novel of the same name, back in 2005, years before he directed his first feature film, TRON: Legacy. Even in early drafts, Kosinski had music on the brain, scribbling in the margins the names of artists he had in mind for the score – Boards of Canada, Ulrich Schnauss and French electronica band M83. When production began years later, Kosinski returned to his notes and zoomed in on M83 mastermind Anthony Gonzalez, whose profile had since risen considerably, thanks to the critically acclaimed double album, Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, and its cavernous international hit, “Midnight City.” (MORE For Director Joseph Kosinski, “TRON: Legacy” Is His Dream Come True) Gonzalez’s knack for spacy soundscapes and ambient layers of synthesizers made him a natural choice for a story heavy of sci-fi action but also full of lush cinematography (courtesy of Life of Pi’s award-winning cinematographer,

Nobody really expected a cartoon featuring post-apocalyptic candy kingdoms and Korean-speaking unicorns to become a children’s-television success story. Nor did anybody expect that same show to be a success story with just about every other demographic out there, either. But that’s exactly what happened to Adventure Time, an animated series following the exploits of Finn, a 14-year-old boy, and his best friend, Jake, a walking, talking and shape-shifting dog. Together, the pair has inspired a loyal legion of fans of that number in the millions. And, now in its fifth season, the show that began as a one-off animated web short is coming back to the medium on which it originally debuted: streaming video. Season one of Adventure Time will go live on Netflix Instant on March 30, with new episodes airing on Cartoon Network through December 2013. If you binged on House of Cards earlier this year, prepare your queue for a dose of trippy whimsy. Adventure Time’s evolution from web short to international franchise has surprised and stumped even those intimately involved with the show, like John DiMaggio, the voice behind Jake (as well as Futurama’s Bender). He remembers one conversation with voice actor Tom Kenny — Adventure Time’s Ice King villain — about the show’s unexpected popularity. “I was like, ‘I just don’t get it man,’” DiMaggio recalls. “And he said, ‘You know what? This is this generation’s Yellow Submarine. It’s that kind of world.’ It finally struck me — and I get it ever since.” (MORE: Disney: Hand-Drawn Cartoons Coming to TV This Summer) * * * At first glance, Adventure Time creator Pendleton Ward doesn’t seem to have much in common with his youthful protagonist. Finn is an ebullient teenager with a signature white bear hat, prone to such unlikely exclamations as “Mathematical!” and “Algebraic!” Ward, on the other hand, is a low-key 30-year-old animator with an epic beard you can “like” on Facebook. But he had the makings of Finn swirling around in his brain from a young age. A childhood interest in animation led his mother to take

He pulled off one of television’s most memorable vanishing acts when he left The Office in 2011. Now, Steve Carell is up to some new tricks — namely, playing a blowhard magician opposite Jim Carrey in The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (opening March 15). Carell plays the title character, Burt, whose relationship with former BFF and partner-in-magic Anton (Steve Buscemi) reaches the breaking point as their stale act battles dwindling audiences and Burt’s enormous ego. But when an edgy, rival street magician (Carrey) starts stealing their thunder, Burt and Anton have to learn — with the help of their beautiful assistant, played by Olivia Wilde — how to rediscover the magic. Here, the 50-year-old actor lets loose with TIME. Your hair in the movie is pretty epic. Yeah, there’s a lot of hair going on. Everybody has their own hair in the movie. James Gandolfini, Steve Buscemi, everyone. Alan Arkin. Hair is a big part of the whole adventure on this one. Now that you’ve rocked a blond mullett, can you say that blonds have more fun? I would say, in my experience, blonds have less fun. Why? The blond mullet look was not working for the missus. Part of the movie filmed in Las Vegas. What’s your craziest Vegas story? I’m not a crazy Vegas guy. I’m not a gambler. I don’t really drink. So that whole aspect of the city is lost on me. I do enjoy a good dinner and a good show. Steve [Buscemi] and I actually went to a few shows together that were really fun, but nothing sordid. Nothing that would make good press. Did you see magic shows? We did, we saw Copperfield, we saw Criss Angel. I have seen Penn & Teller before. We went to the Magic Castle in L.A. We tried to take as much in as we could. The looks of the characters are based on real magicians. Did you and the cast study them while preparing? It was more of an aesthetic thing. I was really just trying to

Pawnee, Indiana, the fictional setting of the NBC comedy Parks and Recreation, which stars Amy Poehler as peppy bureaucrat Leslie Knope, does not exist. That’s because it’s, well, fictional. But on the Internet, Pawnee has a life of its own, and it’s more robust than many real-life municipalities. On the official City of Pawnee site, bare-bones web design straight out of the ’90s shows off pictures of the city’s parks. (In typical local-government fashion, multiple pages are under construction or out of order.) Every member of Pawnee’s city council — characters who rarely appear on the show for more than a few minutes — has their own biography. The site is full of the low-budget charm you’d expect from a town whose motto is “First in friendship, fourth in obesity.” And it doesn’t stop there: Ron Swanson, Leslie’s curmudgeonly lumberjack of a mentor played by Nick Offerman, has a website devoted to grilling. There’s a website for Leslie’s city council campaign that features an extensive political platform and downloadable campaign song. And for every flashy business idea Tom Haverford (Aziz Ansari) dreams up, you can be sure there’s a flashy website, too. These sites are how NBC brings Pawnee to life in a non-TV medium. The network is no stranger to digital extensions of its programs — content for the web and mobile devices outside of a show’s main episodes — but in the past year, its efforts have ramped up. While Parks and Recreation isn’t the network’s leader in ratings or social-media engagement, it’s a prime example of how episodic television can use the Internet to transform the weekly fan experience into a 24-hour one. “The show is on 30 minutes a week,” says Robert Hayes, executive vice-president of digital media at NBC Entertainment. “[The web] gives us a platform to extend the characters’ storyline beyond that, not only as the season goes on, but between seasons. The whole objective is to have a relationship with the fans. I don’t think we realized how powerful it could be, or

His house-flipping reality show, The Vanilla Ice Project, is about to start its third season on the DIY Network, and Van Winkle now runs a seminar on how to kick-start your real estate career and make millions. In the season premiere (Sunday, Jan. 27, at 10 p.m. E.T./P.T.), Van Winkle has his work cut out for him as he tries to transform a vacant mansion into a Polynesian escape — complete with a tiki hut and a man-made river. We talked to Van Winkle, 45, about his design beginnings and the fabulous life of his state-of-the-art homes. How did you start flipping houses? I didn’t plan it. I did “Ice Ice Baby” when I was 16 years old. I had a lot of money to buy some homes. I bought a home on Bleecker Street in the Village in New York. I bought a home in Laurel Canyon up near Michael J. Fox in L.A. I like to snowboard, so I got one up in Utah. I thought I would be using them. For three years, I went on tour and never even saw one of them other than like once or twice. I just came back and thought I was really stupid and young and dumb. I sold them and literally made millions. I was like, “Are you kidding me? It can’t be that easy. Hell, let’s go buy some more!” And then you got into home decorating. The decorative side came about 15 years ago. I had a house in Miami that I had professionally decorated. It was cool because I was 19 at the time, but I had purple rooms, green rooms, a yellow carpet, a red TV room and an acrylic staircase with fish swimming in it. It was neat to walk in and go, “Wow,

Justin Timberlake is being such a tease about his long-awaited new music, but we do know now that it’s finally coming. The singer, movie star and now new MySpace investor first tweeted a mysterious message Wednesday night promising an announcement the next day. That announcement turned out to be another announcement: a countdown clock set for midnight on Sunday, Jan. 13 is currently ticking away on his website, but an accompanying video of Timberlake in the studio affirms he’s ready to be the prince of pop once again. (SEE: Where Justin Timberlake’s Southern Hospitality falls on TIME’s Top 10 Celebrity Restaurants) “I’m the one who sits and is obsessive about it before you even get to hear it,” Timberlake says in the video, explaining why he’s stayed away from music for so long. “I don’t want to put anything out that I feel like is something I don’t love. You just don’t get that every day. You have to wait for it.” And Timberlake’s return to music is shaping up to be a star-studded affair worth the wait. Radio Now 97.9 in Florida claims Timberlake’s comeback single features none other than rapper Jay-Z, whose wife has definitely been working with him. Beyoncé, who previously collaborated with Timberlake on a remix of his song “Until the End of Time” in 2007, revealed in a recent GQ interview that she recorded another song with him for her own upcoming album. (It’s safe to say we probably won’t see him make an appearance during her upcoming Super Bowl performance, though. We all know what happened last time.) The former member of boy band *NSYNC hasn’t released an album since 2006′s FutureSex/LoveSounds, which sold more than 4 million copies. Timberlake was busy the past few years working on his movie career, starring in David Fincher’s The Social Network and opposite Mila Kunis in Friends with Benefits. Hip-hop producer and longtime collaborator Timbaland, who produced some of Timberlake’s biggest hits, including “Cry Me a River,” has reportedly re-teamed with Timberlake to produce the entire upcoming record. So,
