South By Southwest – my favorite time of year. For those of you who prefer music to hoops, this music festival is nothing less than our March Madness; a thoroughly overwhelming onslaught of unknown bands, fresh sounds and new obsessions. The game changer this year for me has been Spotify, and the increasing array of “sxsw 2013” playlists that have cropped up by users who have scanned the bands, filtered through the thousands of albums and cataloged the singles that won them over. All week I’ve been listening on random play, discovering new groups and growing giddy over the creativity that’s about to be unleashed on Austin, Texas. (MORE: The Must-See Films at the SXSW Film Festival) Now I don’t pretend to be the world’s most comprehensive SXSW investigator. I haven’t listened to every band or singer – not even close. But I have spent a fair amount of time listening to artists that I haven’t heard before, and have found a few sure-fire winners. I hope buried somewhere in this list is a new sound that you enjoy too. Here’s my first glance through the program – nine bands worth checking out: 1. On An On: “Ghosts.” If I’m being honest, the one SXSW song that I’ve listened to most is “Ghosts,” by the moody, ethereal and distorted rock group On An On. Consider me enamored (Playing several shows March 13-16): 2. Leagues: “Spotlight.” There’s a little Vampire Weekend here – and also a bit of M83, with a pinch of The Black Keys. Yes, Grey’s Anatomy apparently featured this song, but I don’t watch that ridiculous TV show, so “Spotlight” is still new to me (Playing several shows March 14-16): (MORE: TIME’s Complete Coverage – SXSW 2013) 3. Kitten: “Chinatown.” There’s hints of Metric in Kitten’s sound, an ‘80s vibe that is punchy, catchy and absolutely dance-worthy (Playing several shows March 11, 13, 14, 15 and 16): 4. The Orwells: “Halloween All Year.” Here’s one of my guilty pleasures: The Orwells, straight out of suburban Elmhurst, Illinois, embracing

Anyone who has seen the wonderfully unconventional Beasts of the Southern Wild already knows that young Quvenzhané Wallis is one of the year’s great breakthroughs. Playing a girl by the name of Hushpuppy in the entrancing family drama — which earned raves from the like of TIME’s Richard Corliss — Wallis skewed vulnerable, philosophical and fearless. Even more astonishing: She was only five years-old on the set, as she played a girl coming to grips with an ailing father, an absentee mother, a vicious hurricane and the onslaught of global warming. (SEE: where Quvenzhané Wallis ranks on TIME’s list of 2012′s best performances) After learning she came to the project as a non-professional, I became fascinated by the young star, and I was delighted when I recently had the opportunity to sit down and talk about the movie with both Wallis (who is now nine years-old) and director Benh Zeitlin (who also composed the film’s ravishing score). I had originally been planning to publish the interview the morning of the Oscar nominations. But that’s when I read about the recent spat with the Screen Actors Guild, which deemed the Beasts cast ineligible for its awards. The SAG situation could well hurt Wallis’s Oscar hopes — which would be a shame. Hushpuppy is one of the best characters of 2012. Does Wallis know about all the awards politicking? Sure didn’t seem like it. But I do. So I’m posting this well ahead of the Oscar deadline, in hopes of catching the attention of voters: TIME: I know you’ve been talking about this movie all year, but I’m wondering if you can take me all the way back to the start. Which I think was four years ago — how did you decide to get involved with a movie? Quvenzhané Wallis: It was actually thanks to my mom’s friend. She called and said that they were having this audition for a six- to nine-year-old. So I just went in there and gave it a try and they just kept calling back — and

The Mayan apocalypse — we all know about the calendar, the prophecy, and the debate. The ancient Mayan calendar draws to an end on December 21st, as the winter solstice syncs up with the end of a calendar cycle. Many scholars say there’s nothing to indicate that the Mayans predicted doomsday for humanity (read an expert’s take on all the Doomsday chatter), but the abrupt end to the Mayan vision for the future has fueled theories and speculation for decades, that perhaps they knew something we don’t about a coming cataclysm. Well, Dec. 21 is now only 21 days away; three weeks, it would seem, until our untimely extinction. As I was reminded this morning by colleagues of the nearing Mayan cliff, I started pondering how I would spend my last three weeks on this planet. Would I return to my hometown? Spend three weeks traveling the globe? Nah. As a lifelong movie addict, I’m far more intrigued by the possibility of maxing out my credit card, renting out the glorious Uptown Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota for a month, and overnighting prints of my 21 favorite films. Call it the Doomsday Film Festival, but I’ve learned more about this planet, its people, and our common experience through cinema than through any vacations. (MORE: The all-time greatest movies about the apocalypse) I’d spend my days in the balcony with a big tub of popcorn, remembering all that’s made humanity wonderfully complex. Here are my 21 initial choices, and what those films taught me about our species…They aren’t the best films ever made — just the comfort food that I return to over and over again. These aren’t the favorites of my brain, but my heart. What would your list be? Post your thoughts in the comments below. And without further delay, my Doomsday Film Festival: Dec. 1-7: Youth Discovering the world: Beasts of the Southern Wild, with perhaps the greatest opening sequence of all time and the most inspired depiction of a strong and independent child (for the record, young Quvenzhané

Warning: Major, epic, comprehensive spoilers ahead. Full disclosure: I’ve only seen The Master once. I know, I’m a slacker. I have one friend who’s already seen it twice; another who’s gone around the bend three times. And no doubt they’ve already seen things, and connected dots, that I failed to notice entirely on my inaugural journey. But if the spectacle outside the gala New York premiere two weeks ago is now being replicated across the country — gaggles of smart moviegoers, all huddled on the curb, deconstructing The Master’s plot — then no doubt many viewers are asking the same questions this morning that I was poring over. (MORE: Anderson Twofer: Resident Evil 5 and The Master Nail Big Openings) Part of what makes The Master — as well as every other Anderson film — so exhilarating/unnerving is its enigmatic structure. Two people can sit through the same Anderson scene and arrive at two thoroughly different theories as to the characters’ motivations and aspirations. And yet with The Master, three third-act questions and surprises tower above all others: Why does Philip Seymour Hoffman sing to Joaquin Phoenix in their final scene, why does Freddie Quell (Phoenix) reenact his master’s hypnotic techniques when making love to a woman shortly after, and why does Anderson return in his parting shot to the sand sculpture of a naked woman? It’s a fascinating, and slightly exasperating, debate to engage, because Anderson’s two leading characters can be processed and interpreted so very differently by viewers of varying dispositions. Is Freddie Quell a live wire — just a ravenous animal in search of raw sensory experiences? Or a lost soul overwrought with regrets? Is he a wounded veteran or a mentally unstable nut job? On the flip side: Is Lancaster Dodd a towering, devout believer? Or perhaps a snake oil salesman, an insecure husband desperate to impress his wife, or a repressed gay man in an intolerant age? (MORE: The Master: Neither a Scientology Exposé Nor a Cinema Masterpiece) Some films have subtle overtones; The Master is a cacophony of slight glimpses

Judith Crist was a force of nature. Depending on your age, you may have known the film critic best by her byline in the New York Herald Tribune, her early morning critiques on the Today show or the crop of emerging American filmmakers (Steven Spielberg, Woody Allen) she championed. I was one of the few lucky enough to know her as a teacher — the smartest, harshest and most inspiring mentor of my life. One of the unshakable pillars of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, where she taught for 50 years, Crist continued to shape and mold young writers until this past spring. She died Tuesday at the age of the 90 — read a full appreciation here — and I am willing to venture that my personal tribute to her will be only the first of many to follow. There is a sizable Crist contingent working in journalism today — critics, essayists and writers who were driven to write savvier, and think bigger, by this professor’s blunt assessments. Nothing stung more than her red scrawl in the margins, but nothing was more rewarding than her appraisal that you had taken a commanding stance and argued your point persuasively. It is a credit to her fervent talent that she could so quickly and decisively dissect and dismiss a phrase, an opinion or a critical assessment. But it is a credit to her warmth and compassion that she channeled such confident expertise into lifting up the next generation of tastemakers. When I auditioned for Crist’s class in 2005, she must have seen right through this naïve Midwestern transplant. She asked why I was here, and what I hoped to accomplish, and I pointed to the influence that Roger Ebert’s criticism had had on my lifelong obsession with film. She said she remembered meeting Ebert, that he seemed to be fan of hers. That night I Googled the two together and arrived at the 1990 Chicago Tribune article that cited Ebert’s praise of Crist: “The high profile of film critics actually

Just how good a stripper is Channing Tatum? At the Magic Mike screening I attended, there weren’t just wives but also husbands applauding his eye-popping stage routines. I may or may not have been one of them. Rarely do you see an actor harness such physical energy on the screen, much less dance at this level of intensity while converting raw muscle mass into raging sex appeal. But Tatum is the real McCoy, oozing charisma here as a one-man firestorm who plays along with the strip club script (embodying firemen, construction workers, soldiers, rappers) before erupting into a blur of breakdancing, groin thrusts and flying clothing. For a short time earlier in his life, Tatum was, in fact, a stripper and his confidence is palpable. There are sequences here so electrifying and infectious that it’s easy to see why Warner Bros. (a division of Time Warner Inc.) devised a marketing campaign built entirely around a greased-up Tatum and Matthew McConaughey regaling hordes of screaming women. But in reality, Magic Mike is far less interested in those spotlighted abs than in the lies we tell ourselves in and around that stage. As he’s proven throughout his career, director Steven Soderbergh is intrigued by the shifting moral limits that influence our decisions, and it’s outside the confines of this Florida club where Magic Mike makes its most provocative statements. Mike (Tatum) and Adam (Alex Pettyfer) are two strippers at opposite ends of their career. Mike is the established pro, the 30-year-old headliner of a Tampa all-male revue who knows exactly how to work the crowd, and, far more importantly, rustle up new business from the mainstream bar next door. Adam is the outsider who is introduced to Mike on a construction job — an aimless 19-year-old couch surfer who is sick of being broke, living with his sister, and overcoming a botched football career. (READ: Richard Corliss’s review of 21 Jump Street) It’s Mike who brings Adam into the revue, giving the broke guy a chance to earn a few quick bucks
