Does your idea of humor include a cooking show that teaches you how to order 75 fast-food hamburgers and turn them into a truly epic lasagna? If so, you’ve got company: the comedy team behind “Epic Meal Time” has 4.7 million YouTube subscribers. This week, with its first ever Comedy Week, running from May 19 to 25, YouTube is setting out to make sure that number climbs. “We have amazing YouTube stars who have such passionate fan bases, who a lot of people walking down the street have never seen,” says Danielle Tiedt, VP of marketing at the company. “Many people have never heard of Epic Meal Time, but they should. That’s my goal, to make those names as recognizable as possible.” YouTube’s latest star, a perky blonde entertainer who goes by the nom du Net Jenna Marbles, who was recently profiled in the New York Times. But drawing new viewers and subscribers to comedians on the website isn’t the only goal of Comedy Week. YouTube is also trying to boost its own centrality to well-established comedians known for their off-line work, get more views and subscriptions across the board—and, no big deal, maybe just change the way people everywhere get their dose of humor. (MORE: The Future of YouTube: More Channels in More Places) Here’s how Comedy Week works: YouTube is already devoting a good chunk of their spotlight to comedy, but starting May 19, the site will be flooded with 150 videos made specifically for the event, with new episodes of popular funny webseries and with comedy playlists curated by famous comedians. There will also be a stage show broadcast live May 19 (at 9 pm Eastern) that will then be archived for future watching; the live show features Seth Rogen, The Lonely Island, Tig Notaro and others. It will be hard to watch YouTube without encountering Comedy Week videos, which the company hopes will mean viewers are exploring new channels and spending more time on the site, and the promise of new content throughout the week may bring those potential fans

As Korean pop music (K-pop)—of which Psy is perhaps the best known example in the U.S.—continues to make inroads with American ears, another popular Asian music-world trend has finally made its way stateside: the “high touch.” The concept is simple enough: Fans, selected via a contest or proof that they purchased an album or random drawings, get to give their K-pop idol a high five. Such events, thought to have originated a few years ago in Japan, can draw tens of thousands of fans. As part of their “LIVE ON EARTH” U.S. tour, the K-pop sextet known as B.A.P hosted high touch events in Los Angeles, San Francisco, D.C. and New York City, which the tour’s organizers say are the first ever held in the United States. The events, which took place alongside concerts, were open to 100 lucky contest winners each—and although the events were more modest in attendance numbers than their analogs in Asia, their impact on the fans was anything but. (MORE: Beyond PSY: 5 Essential K-Pop Tracks) For one thing, many American K-pop fans were introduced to the concept for the first time. A number of entrants for the May 16 event in New York City—even those who had traveled from as far as Puerto Rico and Canada, hoping to meet B.A.P—had never heard of a high touch before. Neither had the tour’s organizers: Verizon has sponsored K-pop tours in honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage for six years now, but the idea for the high touch came from the members of B.A.P themselves. “We thought hard about how to connect with our US fans who always support us from far away. So we decided to do the high touch to allow for a more personal experience,” said B.A.P’s Bang Yong Guk, in a translated statement to TIME. Verizon spokesperson Esmeralda Diaz Cameron says the band had to teach the concert sponsors what a high touch was, but that the appeal of the idea was clear once it was understood: it’s not just that the band gets high fives, she said,

In the Trek universe, it’s usually Spock and Kirk who get top billing. But it Simon Pegg’s Scotty—the starship engineer of “Beam me up!” fame—who truly breaks out in Star Trek Into Darkness (out May 16). Here, the 43-year-old actor, who’s also in Shaun of the Dead threequel The World’s End (out Aug. 23), talks with TIME. TIME: You share screen time with aliens in both Star Trek and The World’s End. Do you personally believe they exist? Simon Pegg: I think you’d be foolish not to, to be honest, with the statistics involved. There are billions and billions of planets. It’s like that quote about sowing an entire field of seeds and expecting there to be one to grow. I don’t believe that they’ll visit us. That’s beyond physical capabilities, with the distance between planets, let alone galaxies. It’s way, way too vast to travel in our timeframe. Even at warp speed. But the notion that there’s nothing out there is damn right arrogant and naïve. What if we found signs of alien life? I was thinking this the other day. We’re developing more and more powerful telescopes. I met somebody yesterday who’s a planet hunter, looking for planets in the vicinity of our solar system. Eventually, they’re going to find a planet and they’ll see it, even if they don’t reach it, and they’ll see that there’s water on it. If there’s water on it, there’s life on it. And that’s going to change everything. I’m sure the various religions of the world will absorb it in some way and explain it away, but it is going to completely remove the notion that we are the center of the universe. It isn’t just Earth and Earth wasn’t created — it was part of a bigger something going on, that had nothing to do with us. That’s going to cause something interesting when it happens. I can’t wait. And then we’ll need a Starfleet. Yeah, we’ll get a Starfleet together and we’ll base it in San Francisco, a progressive city, and take off for

Scarlett Johansson fans — true ScarJo fans — may remember that the actress announced, a few years ago, her intention to get behind the camera and direct a movie. She already had a project in mind: an adaptation of the Truman Capote novel Summer Crossing. But for those who can’t remember that far back, a reminder came early this morning, in the form of news from Cannes that the international rights to the movie are up for grabs and that the U.S. distribution deal is already being handled— all signs that the movie is actually happening. (PHOTOS: On the Set of Breakfast at Tiffany’s) Johansson said, in a statement available at The Hollywood Reporter, that the story has been a personal favorite of hers: Several years ago I began working alongside the Capote estate and writer Tristine Skylar to adapt Summer Crossing, an inspired early work of Truman’s which has long captured my heart…Being able to bring this story to the screen as my full length directorial debut is a life dream and deep privilege. Work on the film is scheduled to begin early next year. (MORE: Avengers Deleted Scene Turns Philosophical) Summer Crossing is the story of a teenaged New York socialite who falls for a man below her station—but the book itself has got quite a story of its own. It was the Breakfast at Tiffany’s and In Cold Bold author’s first novel, which he started while in his late teens and working for The New Yorker. He mostly abandoned it in 1944, to begin working on Other Voices, Other Rooms. As the Guardian later reported, he returned to the Summer Crossing manuscript every now and then for the next few years, never feeling done with it, until giving up on it around 1949. He left the manuscript in a box in his apartment in Brooklyn, an apartment he subsequently abandoned as well, at which time (around 1966), his house-sitter found the boxes that had been left outside by the landlord. The work was later found when the house sitter’s relative consigned the boxes. It was then sold at auction in 2004. At the time,

When the “Harlem Shake” song/dance/video craze swept the Internet in February, many casual music-video watchers and copy-cat-video makers learned about one of YouTube’s more interesting features: if you upload a video using a song in YouTube’s Content ID program, the ad revenue from that video goes to the original artist. But music fans weren’t the only people who were fascinated to learn how that particular music-industry sausage was made. Musicians and industry insiders are still learning how to take full advantage of YouTube, says Brandon Martinez, CEO and co-founder of INDMUSIC, a company that’s aiming to help them do just that. The firm helped monetize “Harlem Shake,” using techniques that included adding a link, in all YouTube clips that used the song, to buy the track on iTunes. INDMUSIC (pronounced IN-dee-music) has just announced today that several more labels and music-management companies have joined their program; the company—which mostly functions on YouTube as a “network” rather than a channel—will essentially serve as their YouTube consultant. A few of the artists involved in the deal include Diplo, Lecrae, Afrojack, and Explosions in the Sky. (MORE: ‘Harlem Shake’ Controversy: Artists Behind Unlicensed Samples Seek Money from Hit Song) Martinez says that most independent labels and artists understand why they should put videos online but not how to make sure they’re getting the most profit possible from that move. For example, users can usurp the first response to a search query about a song by having a better understanding of the search algorithm, and established bands can encounter the problem of a fan who has already claimed their name for a channel. “We work with artists who don’t think about YouTube beyond as a place to post your videos,” he says. “People are aware that they should know more about rights management and stuff like that, but they still don’t quite know how.” “The Harlem Shake” is the best ad for INDMUSIC, Martinez says, but their model comes from the world of gaming, specifically the YouTube video-game network Machinima. Machinima’s network has nearly

This week, in an annual event called the “upfronts,” television networks are presenting their new fall schedules to advertisers and members of the TV press — including our own James Poniewozik, who has been filing daily dispatches. Trailers released during the presentations will give you a few months to decide which shows to save a spot for on your DVR. From ABC, we can expect a TV version of Little Giants, but with a mom instead of a dad, and baseball instead of football (Back in the Game); Rebel Wilson as a girl gone a little bit wild (Super Fun Night); and, as seen above, a Wonder Years-style trip down memory lane (The Goldbergs).
When, two years ago, Steve Carell left The Office—a show that had already been on for seven years and had already wrapped up its main romantic plot—many viewers followed. It was hard to escape the feeling that the show had lost its momentum. But with the sitcom entering the home stretch—its final episode airs on May 16—some of those fans have been returning to see how it all ends for the employees of Dunder Mifflin. But not everyone who may want to tune in for the finale has time to catch up on the new characters, romances and paper-sales developments that have been introduced over the past two seasons. If you stopped watching when Michael Scott left Scranton to start a life out west, here’s what you missed: (MEGA-SPOILERS, OBVIOUSLY) (MORE: The Office Will End Big. It Will End Too Late. But It Can Still End Well.) Jim and Pam: Had another kid, Philip. Pam’s maternity-leave replacement tried to seduce Jim, unsuccessfully. Jim started an athlete-management company (Athlead) with some of his college friends; it’s based in Philadelphia, so he split time there and and in in Scranton. This arrangement caused a strain in the Halpert family, especially since Jim was mistaken in his belief that Pam wants to eventually move the whole family to Philly. (Classic Jim: this is the same impulsiveness that led him to buy a house without asking her, except with a less-happy ending.) Roy gets married. Jim and Pam ended up in marriage counseling, with Jim deciding that Pam is more important than his job and agreeing to spend more time in Scranton. Jam ‘shippers should also watch the penultimate Office episode, if only to catch an incredible clip of the best Jim and Pam moments—the kind of thing you get if you type “best Jim and Pam moments” into YouTube, except supposedly made by the documentary crew—and the big reveal of the card that Jim took from the teapot before Pam could open it, all the way back in Season 2. Dwight and Angela: Angela married State Senator

It might be hard to believe, but the Angelina Jolie who now makes headlines for her work on global humanitarian causes is the same Angelina Jolie who, only a dozen years ago, was making headlines for her tattoos, her sexuality and a very intense Oscars-night kiss with her brother. This morning, Jolie may have made the leap to that sparsely-populated realm of stars who are almost above reproach when she announced via an op-ed in the New York Times that she underwent a preventative double mastectomy due to positive tests for a gene linked to breast and ovarian cancers. Hers is a story of a rebellious Goth-friendly actress, known for her sexual escapades and what might be called home-wrecking by fans of Jennifer Aniston, who became an uber-mother with six children—and a celebrity with enough policy smarts to earn a speaking spot at the Council on Foreign Relations. And now it seems she’s poised to become a powerful voice on women’s health. (MORE: Angelina Jolie Says She Had Double Mastectomy) Jolie’s piece was both serious and open, full of personal details about her relationships with her mother—who died of cancer at age 56—and her own children. Along the way, she describes the medical statistics in layman’s terms and touches on the issue of the high cost of medical care. Her goal was to inspire other women to make informed health choices: I choose not to keep my story private because there are many women who do not know that they might be living under the shadow of cancer. It is my hope that they, too, will be able to get gene tested, and that if they have a high risk they, too, will know that they have strong options. And already it’s clear that she’s reaching people: the article quickly shot to the top of the “most e-mailed” list and has been drawing (mostly) sincere and positive responses on blogs and social-media networks, even from those more used to snarkiness about her. The words feel strange even forming together in my mind but… good for

It might be difficult, for some, to understand the magic of Fraggle Rock: the Fraggles are puppets, they live in a cave next to the home of a man named Doc, they love music, their neighbors are Gorgs and Doozers and an oracular heap of trash. But if you were of a certain age in the early ’80s, there’s no denying the feeling brought on by the words “dance your cares away.” The beloved Jim Henson production – which ran for five seasons — turns 30 this year. And marking that anniversary is the release of a special-edition complete-series DVD set, out May 14. TIME talked to Dave Goelz — a longtime Henson puppeteer who brought to life Boober Fraggle, Traveling Uncle Matt Fraggle and Large Marvin Fraggle — about what it took to make the Fraggles happen. The Fraggles were almost called … the Woozles. “It’s a variation on a character group that dated back to the early ’70s called Frackles. I think it was probably just that they were looking for a word they liked as much as that one,” guesses Goelz, who says “Fraggle” has no specific meaning. An archivist at the Henson Company, however, confirms that—while Jim Henson and Fraggle Rock writer Jerry Juhl liked the sound of “Frackles,” who were the bad guys from The Great Santa Claus Switch—the show was originally called Woozle World. That name was abandoned when they discovered that Woozles were characters in Winnie the Pooh. A later working title, Fraggle Hill, was abandoned for sounding too British. Each Fraggle was created with a specific puppeteer in mind. Goelz, who had been working with Muppets since 1974 (and had played Gonzo since 1975), remembers going to New York to “meet” the puppets that had been created for Fraggle Rock. He was immediately suspicious that the puppets had been made with their certain puppeteers in mind, even though the writers denied that was the case. “I looked at the characters and I thought, ‘Well, I’ve gotta be Boober,’” he remembers. “Years later, Jerry Juhl did cop to it.”

Is there such a thing as having too much Agent Phil Coulson, the government operative played by Clark Gregg in The Avengers, Iron Man 2 and Iron Man? ABC is betting the answer is “no.” Gregg will reprise his role in the upcoming TV take on the Avengers universe, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (That’s Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division, for those not in the know.) The first teaser for the show is now available and, though it doesn’t give much away in terms of story or plot, those who like fights and chases and one-liners will have a few reasons to tune in. (MORE: Richard Corliss reviews The Avengers) Another reason? Joss Whedon—who, of course, was making tier-one television (Buffy!) long before he was directing superhero movies. Whedon is listed as a creator for Agents, which will also star Brett Dalton, Ming-Na Wen, Iain De Caestecker and Elizabeth Henstridge as S.H.I.E.L.D agents. They’re tasked with the Fringe-esque job of investigating strange cases that have not yet been classified. No word yet on premiere date.

More than 35,000,000 people have watched the video for John Michael Williams’ song “I Believe In You” since it was uploaded to YouTube on Apr. 16.* That’s about three times more people than have watched the clip for a Justin Bieber song uploaded that same week. Unlike some of the most popular YouTube videos out there, “I Believe In You” has no stars and no humor. And at least one of its millions of viewers—Williams himself—doesn’t know how that many other people found the clip. “Honestly, I was stunned,” he says. “When I did it I sent it out to my contacts, 1,600 people. I’m from a big family and I sent it out to them, and they sent it out. I couldn’t believe it.” Williams, who lives near Boston, says he did no marketing or promotion beyond his usual network. Though he has data from YouTube that show he’s reached a large audience in Asia and Europe—and knows that the video was featured on the Times of India website—he has no idea how his viral fame began. His only guess is that the clip’s suicide-prevention message—and the story behind the song, even though he doesn’t share that story on YouTube—speaks to viewers. “I’m on a mission. It’s coming from that place,” he says. “That’s the only thing I can really figure out. I can’t keep up with my phone and my email and the people who comment; I think they could feel that I could feel it. I’ve been changed by this, in that I never felt like I had a mission before.” (MORE: U.S. Panel Finds Little Evidence to Support Universal Screening For Suicide) Here’s the story: A few years ago, Williams made a movie about the infamous “pregnancy pact” in which 18 high-school girls in Gloucester, Mass., decided to get pregnant at the same time. (It ended up being shown at a local film festival.) Williams mentioned the project to a Welsh couple who attended one of his music events, and they told him about a still-unfolding tragedy

Earlier in the week, Deadline reported that Warner Bros. plans to follow in the games-to-movies trend with an upcoming adaptation of the fantasy role-playing-game Dungeons & Dragons—and now they’ve got word that there’s more to the story. Apparently, even though Warner Bros. has already gotten started on the project after acquiring the rights, Hasbro (the game company that owns D&D in a non-movie sense) says they’ve also started working with rival studio Universal on a cinematic adaptation of their own. The tricky part is that producer Courtney Solomon, who is signed on for the Warner Bros. project, also produced and directed the 2000 Dungeons & Dragons movie—which was distributed by New Line Cinema, which is now part of Warner Bros.—and, according to one of Deadline‘s anonymous sources, Solomon still holds the rights needed to make the project happen. (MORE: Battleship: More Fun Than a Board Game Blockbuster Has Any Right to Be) Well, that’s not the only tricky part. The other thing is that the 2000 version proved that just because a lot of people are passionate about the game doesn’t mean the movie will be a hit. That film, which starred Jeremy Irons and Marlon Wayans, made only $33.8 million worldwide—short of the $45 million budget Box Office Mojo reports for the movie. And critics were no kinder than the box-office: Dungeons & Dragons scored a measly 10% fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes, where fewer than a third of audience members liked it. Still, Warner Bros. and Universal, each betting that they can do one better, are clearly willing to roll the 12-sided dice on this one.
The highly regarded polling firm Public Policy Polling doesn’t usually ask survey respondents about pop music but, with the first round of results from their latest poll released May 9, it’s clear they’re onto something. They created politician-style favorability ratings for some of the biggest names in pop music, and the results were, at least in one case, stark: Justin Bieber was the only artist who tested unfavorably across party lines. His numbers were 23 unfavorable to 54 favorable among Democrats, 17-52 among Republicans and 18-56 among independents. Other artists who tested unfavorably, not accounting for political affiliation, were Chris Brown, Lady Gaga, Jay-Z and Rihanna. On the other side, Taylor Swift, Adele, Beyonce and Justin Timberlake had high approval ratings. Timberlake also received a winning 34% of votes when respondents were asked who they would vote for for President. (At the same time, 31% of people said, when asked which of his endeavors they prefer, that Timberlake should just focus on playing golf.) Bieber got 8%; fortunately for 92% of Americans, he’s Canadian. (MORE: 50 Years Later, A Beatles Record is Broken) More than half the poll respondents had no idea who Skrillex is or what they should feel about whatever Skrillex is. A few other intriguing tidbits : 75% of Americans have not been to “the club.” Snoop Lion should return to being Snoop Dogg, say 56% of people. 67% of respondents think Rihanna and Chris Brown should not get back together. While less than half of those polled had a favorable view of “today’s popular music,” most (77%) had a favorable view of classic music. There’s no word (yet) from Public Policy Polling on whether Yo Yo Ma should run for office.
Ralph Macchio is still associated with the characters he played decades ago—in slight heroes of The Karate Kid, My Cousin Vinny and The Outsiders—but the actor, now 51, also has a newer role that’s proven enduring: the role of Ralph Macchio. Though he’s hardly the first actor to play a version of himself, Macchio has made the most of those opportunities. He played “Ralph Macchio” on Entourage in 2005, on Head Case in 2007, in a Funny Or Die short in 2010. He’ll be tackling the role two time this month—on an episode of How I Met Your Mother and in the upcoming indie comedy He’s Way More Famous Than You (opening, in limited release, May 10). Macchio talked to TIME about what makes a good fictional Ralph Macchio and why he needs to take a break from “wax on” one-liners. How did you end up playing yourself in so many things at once? What happened was, I just stepped off the Dancing With the Stars stage and wanted to take a little rest as I was hobbling around, and Michael Urie, who I worked with on Ugly Betty said, “We’re doing this movie [He's Way More Famous Than You] for a dollar and fifty cents, and it’s really funny, and would you help me out?” When you do these types of passion projects, you’re doing someone a favor — but you also have to believe in it. We found an angle to play the guy who was an anti- version of me. I’d had this video through Funny Or Die called “Wax On, F*ck Off,” which I co-wrote and created right when the Karate Kid remake was coming out. Before, on Entourage, I played myself and it was a pretty cool version of me. And I said the same thing to How I Met Your Mother: find something that is an interesting angle of me-being-me. Then, it’s worth it. But I’m going to take a step back from it right now. He’s Way More Famous Than You was filmed two summers ago; with the irony of

In the latest example of the power of social-media backlash, Disney-Pixar announced late yesterday that the company would back off on a move that had generated an online uproar over the last few days. As the Pixar-centric site Pixartimes.com reports, the studio behind such beloved movies as Toy Story 3 have long made it known that they’re working on a film related to the Latin American holiday Día de Los Muertos—or, Day of the Dead. On May 6, Stitch Kingdom reported that Disney had filed applications to trademark the phrase “Día de Los Muertos,” which some speculated would be movie’s title. The trademark would have covered snacks, audio recordings, jewelry, cosmetics, key chains and lots of other potential merchandise related to the film. It was a move that raised the ire of many who found distasteful the idea of a major media company trying to establish “ownership” of an important cultural event. The pushback worked: Disney told Fronteras on Tuesday that not only would the trademark filing be withdrawn, but also the movie’s title would be changed. (WATCH: A Live-Action Remake Of Toy Story) But if Disney had not decided to back off, could they have successfully trademarked the name of a holiday? In a way, says Marshall Leaffer, a copyright-law expert and professor at Indiana Law. “The Day of the Dead can attain a trademark significance if it’s used in a trademarked sense,” he says. “If someone wants to use ‘Day of the Dead’ in describing a particular holiday, under general trademark principles and free speech principles, the trademark owner cannot object to it.” In short, a trademark—not a copyright; U.S. law doesn’t provide copyright protection for titles—would have protected Disney against others trying to create merchandise that referenced their movie, but it would not have given the company ownership of the idea behind the holiday, or the words used in the phrase. In addition, Disney would probably have had to prove that the phrase “Día de los Muertos” had a specific Pixar-only meaning in order to be successful in applying for
