Sleigh Bells are very, very popular among a small subset of people. Depending on who you are, where you live, what kind of music you listen to and the types of websites you visit, you either have already read a dozen articles about them or none at all. Ever since Brooklyn duo Derek Miller and Alexis Krauss released their first single “Crown on the Ground,” in 2009, they’ve been the subjects of extensive praise (and scrutiny) on niche websites and music magazines. They’d barely been together for a year before they were courted by M.I.A.; Sleigh Bells released their debut album Treats on her boutique record label in 2010 and were invited to play Coachella before it had even come out. But while such premature adoration often proves unwarranted with bands still wet behind their ears, Sleigh Bells have lived up to expectations, mostly by managing to carve out a rock sound that is fairly unique. Their abrasive songs — full of electronic feedback, shredded guitars, the higher end of a keyboard and drums that aren’t so much played as battered — would be migraine-inducing if they weren’t tempered by Krauss’ breathy, little girl vocals, resulting in something that’s part metal, part pop. It’s such a distinctive sound that once you hear a Sleigh Bells tune, you’ll be able to recognize any of the band’s other work. Miller is the duo’s primary songwriter and although he used to play in a Florida hardcore band, his songs often contain references to teenage crushes, high school dances, braces and kids who hang out behind a Circle K. There’s a distinct 1960s girl group vibe to the band’s melody and lyrics, which Miller says its on purpose. “It’s the most natural marriage in the world to me,” he said in an interview with TIME. “I don’t listen to a ton of hardcore metal anymore but that’s where I really cut my teeth, and Alexis and I are massive Shangri-Las fans. Carole King, Phil Spector — it’s safe to call these people heroes of mine.” On

Here’s a story my father likes to tell: It’s 1967 in Jackson, Mississippi and he’s 18 years old, riding in the car with my grandfather. For several years the two have had a recurring argument about rock ‘n’ roll, specifically the Beatles. My dad thinks their music is revolutionary while my grandfather says the Fab Four make nothing but noise. Instead, he favors big band music and songs by Irving Berlin. The car’s radio is tuned “to some Lawrence Welk-type station,” as my dad remembers it, which is playing an upbeat, piano-based instrumental song full of soaring horns and string instruments. They’re well into their Beatles argument when my grandfather gestures to the radio and says, “Now this is a good song. This is real music. If the Beatles wrote something like that, I might like them.” My dad turns to his father. “They did,” he says. “That’s an instrumental version of ‘Good Day Sunshine’.” “Well, then they should have played it that way to begin with,” my grandpa harrumphs. Forty-five years later, thanks to Paul McCartney’s new album Kisses on the Bottom, my grandpa finally got his wish. (MORE: Read TIME’s 1967 cover story on the Beatles) McCartney turns 70 this year. It’s surprising, I know. Maybe it’s because his hair is still (dyed?) brown and he still fits into his slender-legged suits, but he doesn’t seem that old. I saw him play the Apollo Theater last year and he belted the ending of “Hey Jude” with as much energy as he did when the song was first recorded. Macca’s still got it, but you wouldn’t know that from listening to Kisses on the Bottom. There is no ‘it’ there. No rocking, no rolling, nothing that will take you above a resting heart rate. The Beatle appears to have finally grown old. Kisses is a collection of 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s standards that McCartney has known since childhood — his father was a former big band member, after all. From tunes such as “Your Mother Should Know” and “Martha

There are so many things happening on the Of Montreal album Paralytic Stalks, so many horns and strings and layered harmonies swirling together at the same time — not to mention the whirs, beeps and chimes whose sources you might not be able to place — that it’ll leave you with a feeling akin to waking from a particularly bizarre dream. Take for example, the album’s fourth track, “We Will Commit Wolf Murder.” The off kilter, synth-heavy pop song doesn’t have a chorus, but is instead tied together by one line repeated across several verses by Of Montreal lead singer Kevin Barnes. “There’s blood in my hair,” he sings — almost happily, it seems — but never explains why it’s there or whose veins it came from. Go on, just tell me you haven’t ever had a nightmare like that before. (MORE: The All-TIME 100 Songs) But, like a dream, Of Montreal’s experimental weirdness is grounded in a reality we recognize. Barnes has released an album nearly every year — never going more than two — since Of Montreal’s 1997 debut, Cherry Peel. Back then, Of Montreal was mostly a solo project, and Barnes worked in a traditional 1960s-inspired pop-rock vein similar to his Elephant 6 companions Apples in Stereo and Olivia Tremor Control. (Elephant 6 was a collection of likeminded, likesounded indie rock bands based in Denver and Athens, Georgia in the 1990s—Barnes wasn’t a founding member but he was associated with them). But over time, he slowly traded in his 2- and 3-minute Beatle-esque pop melodies for long, experimental soundscapes woven together with the help of computers. A lot of computers. That’s why Barnes expands his musical project to include dozens of multi-instrumentalists during concerts — there’s no way one man could perform this psychedelic carnival on his own. Barnes used to write and record his albums alone at his home studio in Athens, but on his last effort, 2010’s False Priest, he employed an outside producer, Jon Brion, as well as guest musicians and vocal performances from

Pop Quiz! Today is Valentine’s Day and: a) You can’t wait to celebrate it with someone you love. b) Or someone you’re just pretending to love. c) You’re “boycotting” it by going out with your friends. d) You’ll be spending it with tray of brownies and The Notebook. e) It’s another painful reminder that you’ll probably going to die alone surrounded by cats. It doesn’t matter if you answered a, b, c, or d because TIME has a Valentine’s Day playlist for you. (If you answered e…well, you have bigger problems to worry about). We’ve put together two Spotify mixes to serve all your romantic (or non-romantic) Valentine’s Day needs: TIME in Love will cultivate that giddy feeling you have when you meet somebody you want to share your life with. TIME out of Love will reinforce your cynical conviction that more often than not, that giddy feeling fades and then you’re left miserable and alone. Again. So take your pick, and let us know which playlist you prefer: the one in which Stevie Wonder says you’re sunshine of his life or the one in which the Dixie Chicks poison a low-down, terrible man named Earl. UPDATE: Some of our readers live in countries that don’t have access to Spotify and have asked us to post the playlist some other way. The best we could do is a list, which we’ve included below: TIME in Love Beyoncé — “Love on Top” Stevie Wonder—”You Are the Sunshine of my Life” Tammi Terrell — “This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak For You)” Joni Mitchell — “You Turn Me On I’m a Radio” The Beach Boys — “God Only Knows” Van Morrison — “Crazy Love” Devendra Banhart — “Baby” The Samples — “Did You Ever Look So Nice” Wilco — “I’m the Man Who Loves You” Aretha Franklin — “Baby, I Love You” Sam Cooke — “Bring It On Home to Me” Rilo Kiley — “With Arms Outstretched” Hall & Oats — “You Make My Dreams” Guillemots — “Made-Up Lovesong #43″ The

It’s Fashion Week in New York City and Manhattan is crawling with eccentric designers, stylish socialites and hungry models looking for next season’s big trend. It seems that our invitation to Marc Jacobs’ show got lost in the mail, so to console ourselves we’ve put together a stylish Spotify playlist. Lady Gaga, ZZ Top and David Bowie are on there, as well as Run DMC’s ode to Adidas and Tommy Tucker’s 1960s tune about high heeled sneakers. Unfortunately, the Kinks’ “Dedicated Follower of Fashion” isn’t on Spotify so we had to make do with a cover. Let us know what you think of the playlist in the comments. Which “Supermodel” song you like best, Jill Sobule’s or RuPaul’s?

M.I.A. released a music video for her song “Bad Girls,” and at first glance it appears to be a political statement about women drivers in Saudi Arabia. Then again, maybe the Sri Lankan rapper adopted a stylish Arabic aesthetic because it looks cool. It’s hard to tell with M.I.A. Either way, it’s a fun video and I think we can all agree that women and men should be able to drag race, pop wheelies and drive their cars on two wheels equally.

On my subway ride home from work the other day, a young man pointed to my headphones and asked, “What’re you listening to?” This is an awkward question for music journalists. Sometimes we listen for personal enjoyment and sometimes because work requires it. (On some wonderful and rare occasions, it’s both.) But I answered him honestly. I told him was listening to Nada Surf. “Nada Surf?” he said and then quietly laughed. “Like, that ‘Popular’ song?” Yes. Nada Surf. I was listening to The Stars Are Indifferent to Astronomy, a new album by the 1990s alt-rock band with the half-spoken, half-sung 1996 novelty hit “Popular.” So what? (And by the way, if you’re trying to hit on a stranger, it’s probably not a good idea to laugh at their choice of music.) But as rude as he was, the subway stranger had a point. Most people, if they remember Nada Surf at all, remember them as a flash-in-the-pan group with the one song. In reality, Nada Surf has put out seven albums during its near 20-year career. The New York trio operates in exactly the type of guitar-heavy indie rock one might expect from a band that formed during the height of grunge and refined its sound in the early 2000s when softer bands like Death Cab for Cutie were all the rage. Nada Surf’s optimistic lyrics and poppy hooks — not to mention frontman Matthew Caws’ emotive vocals — make the band a joy to listen to. Take away their one hit (“Popular” peaked at No. 11 on Billboard’s rock chart) and you don’t have a musical dud, you have a solid, under-the-radar rock band that’s done pretty well for itself. But that’s not what people expect when they think about one-hit wonders. When a band or artist has one major song and then drops off the pop culture radar, we assume that they have failed, that they’re unable to follow up with anything as successful. It’s the cliché embodied in Tom from Bridget Jones Diary, a man who,

Yesterday, Ben Folds announced that he’d reunited with his former bandmates Darren Jessee and Robert Sledge to record a new Ben Folds Five album. A project had been rumored to be in the works for a while but now that Folds has tweeted a picture of the trio recording in the studio, we know the process is underway. (The last Ben Folds Five album was 1999′s The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner, although Folds has of course released a number of solo albums over the years). According to the band’s reps, the group doesn’t yet have a label on board for the album so a release date isn’t set, but on Twitter Folds said it would be a “spring release.” (Are you sure, Ben? It’s already almost February). That’s all the information we have for now, so we’ll leave you with this video of the band performing “Underground” instead:
