Alec Baldwin on an episode of "30 Rock"

Alec Baldwin is definitely retiring from public life, just after he joins the elite squad known as the Special Victims Unit.

The embittered former TV host will play a newspaper columnist in an upcoming episode of Law & Order: SVU, which should be a big stretch for the former NPR interviewer and MSNBC host. He’ll be joined by Katie Couric, who will play herself in a cameo.

The episode, slated to air this spring, will also be the directorial debut of Mariska Hargitay, who plays the badass Detective Olivia Benson in the hit crime procedural. It will be Baldwin’s first TV acting gig since 30 Rock ended last year.

Baldwin made headlines earlier this week by vowing to disappear from New York public life because he was sick of being hounded by the paparazzi and frustrated by his experience in the media world. Instead, he’ll lie low by resurrecting his career as a Hollywood movie star.
