Octavia Spencer arrives at 2012 Writers Guild Awards at The Hollywood Palladium on February 19, 2012 in Los Angeles, California

Oscar winner Octavia Spencer is headed to TV for the American remake of Red Band Society, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Red Band Society began as a highly lauded Spanish series about teenagers living in a hospital who become friends. The American version will follow a similar plot. Spencer, who won both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in the 2011 movie The Help, will play a strict nurse who works in the pediatric ward and cares deeply for her young patients. Margaret Nagle of Boardwalk Empire fame is set to write the script, and the show counts Steven Spielberg among its producers.

This will be Spencer’s first appearance in a television series. Spencer was originally supposed to play the lead in a reboot of Murder, She Wrote, but NBC dropped the project early this year.
