Twenty-two years haven’t erased the tarnishing legacy of accusations levied against Woody Allen for allegedly molesting his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow. Two weeks after the director was awarded a Golden Globe for lifetime achievement, Farrow has come forward and given an account of the alleged sexual abuse and its impact on her life since the 1992 scandal broke.

The director has never been convicted of child abuse, and the veracity of Farrow’s claims have been the subject of some debate, with a panel of psychiatrists siding with Allen and a judge ruling in favor of Farrow and her mother in a custody battle.

Allen’s attorney released a statement on Sunday: “It is tragic that after 20 years  a story engineered by a vengeful lover resurfaces after it was fully vetted and rejected by independent authorities.  The one to blame for Dylan’s distress is neither Dylan nor Woody Allen.”

In her statement to the New York Times, Farrow retells the story of her alleged abuse and explains how she’s struggled with Allen’s continuing stardom. She writes:

That he got away with what he did to me haunted me as I grew up. I was stricken with guilt that I had allowed him to be near other little girls. I was terrified of being touched by men. I developed an eating disorder. I began cutting myself.

That torment was made worse by Hollywood. All but a precious few (my heroes) turned a blind eye. Most found it easier to accept the ambiguity, to say, “who can say what happened,” to pretend that nothing was wrong. Actors praised him at awards shows. Networks put him on TV. Critics put him in magazines. Each time I saw my abuser’s face — on a poster, on a T-shirt, on television — I could only hide my panic until I found a place to be alone and fall apart.

You can read the full statement here.

This story was updated with a statement from Woody Allen’s attorney.

If reading the comments for this article has been at all unsettling, let that be the most disturbing part: All of us have a role to play in perpetuating or ending this kind of victim shaming. The the only way to stop the cycle is to speak its name -- to stop allowing rape and sexual abuse to be hidden. I appreciate Dylan's willingness to discuss her experience, after what must be a lifetime filled with confusion, hurt and lack of community support.

No one but the parties involved know the truth of what happened. But, if we are willing to give Woody Allen the benefit of the doubt, then we should be willing to give Dylan that, if not more. If you imagine your chid or any child coming to you and saying that someone has sexually abused or violated them, your first response, regardless of doubt, should be to support the most ill-equipped person involved: the chid. If this incident occurred locally, involving people we know nothing about, it is likely that we would be more skeptical of the perpetrator than the victim. But for some reason, people on this forum seem to think they know Woody Allen, Dylan Allen and Mia Farrow. We do not. All we know is that someone with much more to lose and little to gain has decided to, after years of silence, give her account of sexual abuse.

I hope Dylan's willingness to speak about her experience will help us wake up to the horrors of sexual abuse against children, which is far too often tolerated or excused. Victims must feel comfortable to talk about the violence they've survived; and family members and friends have to be ready to listen. It is senseless that so many young people are abused and feel like they must remain silent about it. That's not their fault, it's ours. If victims believed no one would judge them or think less of them for coming forward -- if they knew they would be supported and loved and helped -- this crisis could be helped and hopefully, one day, stopped.

Why is he not being prosecuted.  There is no statute of limitations in most states on child rape and molestation. No doubt there are other victims and perhaps he is even victimizing children still.

Yes, there is a statute of limitations and it has passed.

I find it sad that just because a man is famous and powerful, that people will look the other way. Just because they cannot conceive someone would do such a thing to their own adopted daughter, does not mean it did not occur. Dylan will live with this horror her entire life, while Woody Allen will continue to be a perpetrator. How many lives will he destroy? When I was younger, I used to enjoy Woody Allen's movies, Now I can't watch them without being sick to my stomach, so I stopped watching anything he had anything to do with. What he did to his first adopted daughter was sick and told me everything I needed to know about him. The man is a pervert and a pedophile. Anyone who knows anything about sexual abuse can see this. Blessings to Mia for fighting her way out of the mess he created. I am sure Woody and his minions made her life hell during the process. This man needs to be put away before he can destroy anyone else. Dylan will need to be strong, because even though he has already taken a huge part of her stability in life away, this sick man will continue to destroy what is left, because she has refused to be a part of his sickness any longer. May Woody someday have to live the life of pain he has created in so many others' lives. The saddest part of that statement is that he has created that suffering for the people he was supposed to have loved and protected. He is a sad excuse of a man and father. Shame on those around him who continue to aid in his abuse, by covering it up. Wake up people, and stop living in denial. You should have listened the first time this stuff made itself apparent!

1992 abuse case, lets be honest if someone was lying, they let the dead dog lye. Instead she it still feeling the affects, I'm not agreeing or  disagreeing, but imagine the probable amount of abuse cases that have gone un-investigated you'd be staggered. Let's be honest, young man were being abused in the shower rooms of a university. Still no one had any Idea, so full house of people mean nothing. Sexual abuse committed by white males, barely gets any attention unless, A:  They look evil, or B: they are not powerful or well known.

America, is still in love withe the successful white male, to the point that it by default doesn't 'want' to believe that this person could have committed such a crime.

If he voiced an unfavorable opinion about gays or said the "N" word he would be chased out of Hollywood.

But molesting young girls (his own daughter!) is ok in that town. Google Roman Polanski.

These are the people so many idolize and listen too?

The despicable 1% liberals!

@bcodog2 Your post is very ignorant. What the h*ll does politics have to do with this??  "1% liberals"...you should read more...REALLY!

In Dylan's own words snipped from her essay:

After a custody hearing denied my father visitation rights, my mother declined to pursue criminal charges, despite findings of probable cause by the State of Connecticut – due to, in the words of the prosecutor, the fragility of the “child victim.”

This needs repeating:

despite findings of probable cause by the State of Connecticut

If the state found probable cause, if Dylan said so (and never wavered in all these years) then the right thing to do is to believe the child over the father who engaged in a sexual relationship with said child's SISTER and shun Allen. Not reward Allen with awards, scripts, big budgets and hero worship.

@zinnsand21  The prosecutor was severely reprimanded for making the "I found probable cause" statement, which went far beyond the purview of his job. I am not a Woody Allen fan at all and found his decision to choose a new children from amongst the children of his old girlfriend to be absolutely inappropriate (but she was over 18 and not his step-daughter, so technically he did nothing wrong, it was just not okay in my opinion), but I have never believed that he touched his 7-year old daughter, esp. as they were in a house full of other people at the time of the supposed incident and he and Mia were fighting over custody. It makes no sense at all that he should choose this moment to become a pedophile. And psychologically, a pedophile is a very specific thing--it's not something one dabbles in. The ignorance of the public about what pedophilia really is has contributed greatly to the impression that he is guilty. Any time an angry woman fighting for custody suddenly brings out an accusation of molestation, I am deeply skeptical. Dylan changed her story again and again, as coerced children often do. I think Mia was so furious she couldn't see straight (and who can blame her, after what happened), but Allen passed his polygraph while she refused to take one, and her own testimony during the hearing actually helped Allen. Damage has been done to Dylan, clearly, but I do not believe it was at Allen's hands.

Spoken like true defense attorney.

Read her complete statement. It's matter of whether you believe her or not.

I believe her.

So I find your excuses for him ignorant.

@zinnsand21 The only problem with this is that, if you bother to read the actual report, the investigation found specifically that Dylan was believed to have been coached to make these statements, pointed to her shoulder when asked if her father had touched her somewhere, was examined by doctors who found no indication of any sexual abuse, and now Dylan is lying abut these things because she knows that most people see a pretty woman and want to ride in like a white knight.

Not a fan of Woody because his movies aren't my thing, but this isn't a tough case to know which side is overwhelmingly likely to be truthful. And it isn't Dylan.

Also, the child's SISTER was adopted. Also, she was not adopted by Woody. She was adopted by Mia Farrow and Mia Farrow's then husband. So basically Woody dumped his girlfriend (Mia) and started dating her adopted daughter who was at that point an adult.

But hey, why let actual facts get in the way of hysteria?

@bcodog2 Maybe read the actual police investigation complete with police investigators, interviews, the physical exams conducted by doctors, the fact that Woody took and passed a lie detector and Mia refused, followed by the decision made by the actual police investigators that Dylan was coached.

They were not fighting over custody. He sued for custody AFTER Dylan reported the alleged abuse. The judge found the custody lawsuit and WA's relentless pursuit of it to be frivolous and harmful to the family.it was because of the custody lawsuit that I stopped watching his movies.

Woody chose to have sexual relationship with his all-but-legal stepdaughter, which devastated the entire Farrow-Previn family and separated Soon Yi from most of her family, permanently. I don't know if you have children or how you would feel if you found your teenage daughter's stepfather was having sex with her and leaving porographic pictures of her lying around . The house for the younger cjildren to find. Most parents would be furious and considrr it a betrayal of trust, which was the respnse of both of Soon Yi's parents. Her siblings stated that he was a father figure to them and were very distressed. And the fact that she was adopted is irrelevant.

He is just a dirty paedophile who has been protected by Hollywood dirty society and because he is Jewish, but I am sure any independent physiognomy or psychiatrist will see read his dirty mind very clearly. It is a shame to protect such people whoever they are. He has always given me that feeling and I do not believe his stepdaughter would ever lie when she was a child. Some countries have elaborated and published paedophiles lists in order to peotect children from their approach.

@FlorindaFlor I am not an Allen fan, and I in no am I defending him, but...

What is your evidence for your claim that Allen was protected because he is Jewish?  And you can read people's minds based on their physiognomy?  I think that's just stupid.

So so frightening that his "wife" (aka stepdaughter) and he have adopted two more children . . .oh, I hope she will protect them from him!

Unfortunately I'm not surprised. After all, he married his step-daughter #sickman

@AnnieTowne @arielemail94

Yes, it is frightening at the depth of ignorance exhibited here. Hearsay rules. Considering the circumstances of the time, timing, and the situation, the accusation seemed a ploy in the custody battle, and not something actual. As someone who had been molested, one can choose to be a victim, or one can take control. I left home at 14 and never looked back.
Woody Allen always seems to be someone working through his own insecurities and desires. Soon-Yi seemed someone who was not all innocence and ignorance. Not everyone is gullible.

@arielemail94  She was never his step-daughter! She is Andre Previn's daughter, and to be his step-daughter, he'd have had to marry Mia. They were never married, and never even co-habited. Soon-Yi was his daughter's girlfriend, not his step-daughter. I think he was terribly wrong to get involved with Soon-Yi, but please get the facts straight. All of the commenters here are completely ignorant of the facts of the case, of what pedophilia is, of the relationships of the players. Everyone just seems to want to attack.

And no, I do not like his movies, nor do I think he is a genius who should be protected from justice should he ever commit a crime. But so far, he has committed no crimes, never been tried for any, and certainly never convicted.
