Ellen DeGeneres will executive produce a lesbian-themed sitcom pilot for NBC.

The show will be called One Big Happy and will be written by Liz Feldman, who’s written for Degeneres in the past on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, according to the Hollywood Reporter. One Big Happy will follow a lesbian who gets pregnant just as her straight male best friend falls in love. The newspaper did not mention whether DeGeneres would act in the show.

NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt has rubber-stamped a number of gay-themed programs in his time, including The L Word and the U.S. adaptation  of Queer as Folk as head of Showtime. NBC canceled Ryan Murphy’s gay-themed The New Normal after one season last year, but if DeGeneres show is greenlit, it would join this season’s half-hour Sean Saves the World in NBC sitcoms with openly gay lead characters.

SO much of this is very surprising; "Sean" gets a second season? Ellen's show gets serious consideration after "The New Normal" bombs?  NBC actively seeks to further narrow her audience? I guess that Ellen really is the white Oprah.

We've had a couple of sitcoms that feature gay men. Why not Lesbians?
