Juan Pablo Galavis Says There Shouldn’t Be a Gay Bachelor

Can you really say "I don't think it's a good example for kids" and still "respect" gay people?

TV personality Juan Pablo Galavis, The Bachelor, arrives at the ABC/Disney TCA Winter Press Tour party at The Langham Huntington Hotel and Spa on January 17, 2014 in Pasadena, California.

Those who fail to learn from Duck Dynasty are doomed to repeat it. In an interview Friday night, ABC’s current Bachelor, Juan Pablo Galavis, told The TV Page’s Sean Daly that it would be a bad idea to do a season of the show with a gay Bachelor. “I don’t think it’s a good example for kids,” he said, adding that the situation would be “confusing” and that gay people are “more pervert in a sense.” (You can listen to his whole answer here.)

I’m going to assume most of us never considered a show where a guy chooses from a harem of strange women to necessarily be a shining model for impressionable children. (This current season, some of the women on the show posed nude, strategically covered by shelter puppies. It, um, teaches kids the importance of caring for animals!) And this leaves ABC in an obviously tough PR position; it could be criticized if it does nothing, but unlike A&E it doesn’t have the option of giving its star a fig-leaf “suspension” before the show goes on the air.

All that will play out, and, who knows, maybe it will end up with someone organizing Bachelor viewing parties at Chick-Fil-A. What strikes me, though, is Galavis’ constant use of the refrain “respect,” five times in a less than two minute answer (“I respect them, but…” “…and I respect that 100%…”).

To paraphrase Otis Redding, what does r-e-s-p-e-c-t mean to him? I respect you, but it’s bad for kids to see the way you live? I respect you, but you’re a pervert?

I don’t pretend to know Galavis or to read his mind. He may be sincerely wrestling with the question; in the middle of the answer, he pointed out a gay friend of his (whom he “respects,” of course). It may be that he got tripped up in his answer, or is trying to reconcile an ingrained belief with a life experience (meeting actual gay people) that contradicts it.

Regardless, it does seem that Galavis is using the term “respect” as kind of a talisman, something that we know you’re supposed to say about any group of people even if you have issues with them. He’s hardly the first person in the world to do this, and much more practiced public speakers than him have made “I respect you but…” a reflex. And sure–you can respect people and disagree with them politically or religiously, you can respect people but not feel they’re doing their jobs well, and so on. For that matter Galavis could respect gay people and answer, say, that regardless of his opinion ABC is probably not going to rush out and do a gay Bachelor because of the controversy and ratings risk.

But “respect” isn’t just a magic word that you can apply to any statement to neutralize it. At some point, it has to actually correspond to your actions, and to the way you believe people should be treated in the real world, or it’s just empty rhetoric. You can, say, respectfully disagree with a group of people yet recognize that they should have the same opportunities–under the law or on TV–as you. But can you say that someone’s very way of being is a bad example to children, and perverted, and still respect them?

Respectfully, I would disagree.

I used to respect this guy but as I watched his actions and heard his opinions I started disliking him. JP, you say you don't want your daughter to watch you kissing while you kiss these girls every 5 seconds. You're definitely not a, how do you say, "pervert in a sense."

it not a matter of morals and ideaology but of virology and bacteriology,

because fecal bacteria does not belong in the urethra,

the story should be explained of what actually happens in homosex,   - it is exit not entrance

Dear America and Americans,

You may not have realized it, but you are and you live in the richest most technologically advanced nation on Earth. You have many schools in each city in the land. You don't sacrifice chickens to the gods. Please keep this in mind going forward.

Thank you,

The Lady doth protest too much. I am gay and HATE the saying he looks so gay...BUT Juan baby, I'd loose a huge bet on you because you DO NOT look straight. If history teaches us anything..the people that complain the most are usually doing whatever they are opposing.

So this whoring show thinks it is  the best standard for kids? I just can't comprehend a show where one guys tastes as many as a dozen girls and he thinks he sets a good standard for morality

Coming from a straight, single mom who has never missed a Bachelor/Bachelorette season (don't judge me too harshly), I have just signed off on the balance of this season with Juan Pablo.  I'm all for his right to express his opinion about homosexuality, but I respectfully choose to disagree and will do so by tuning off The Bachelor this season.  Sorry ABC.

The article forgot to mention that the state for FL attached to his earnings because he doesn't pay his child support. I guess that's a good example for kids in his eyes

This dude is as dense as his hair style. Get on with the business of living YOUR LIFE and doing the best job of it you can. Straight people, gay people are in the end just that, PEOPLE. No one sexual orientation should be deemed better than another. Who are you to say that I am inferior because GOD mad me gay; and make no mistake, GOD did make me gay from the git go.

There’s a whole lot of anger going around with the gay and lesbian issue and there need not be.Everyone is going to live their lives the way that they want. Most people have the right to exercise free will.

The big issue is, as we’re ushered onto the threshold that takes us from Earth to the next part of our life, how to reconcile ourselves to how GOD intended for us to live our lives while we were here on Earth. Is that not it?We all want to convince others, GOD included, that we’re making the right choices, right? We can convince some of the people some of the time. But does anyone know GOD well enough to completely convince HIM? The simple solution that does not require further debate, go GOD's way and He will provide a mediator in court when it really matters.  Read on as I tell below how HE provides the mediator.

The source of this debate was founded long before GOD even created this earth.  Lucifer (aka Satan) warred against GOD and was cast out of heaven, along with 1/3 of the angels.  GOD is all-powerful and Satan can not defeat HIM. GOD created us, and all things in heaven and earth, to bring glory and honor to HIMself.Satan warred in heaven against GOD because of pride, because he wanted to be like GOD.Satan can not be GOD and can not create and, therefore, as the prince of this world, uses his influence to get us to compromise our lives, to defile ourselves. In this way, he (Satan) attempts to take the honor and glory that GOD intended for HIMself when he, GOD, created us.How does Satan take honor and glory that should only be attributed to GOD?If we do not obey GOD but rather follow the alternative offered by Satan, then we have honored Satan by following him rather than GOD.Satan offers an alternative that is always a compromise even though on the surface it may appear to be the same as what GOD intended for us.

GOD loves us at all times, but Satan knows that sin will separate us from GOD because sin is contrary to GOD’s nature. GOD’s first creation of man was in the Garden of Eden.Genesis 1:27 of the KJV bible declares So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. The names of the first male and female were Adam and Eve.GOD gives us opportunities to obey Him in this life and our obedience glorifies and honors GOD.GOD gave Adam and Eve opportunity to obey Him but Satan deceived them with a lie.

GOD is light and can not sin.Human sin is foreign to GOD’s nature, and Adam and Eve’s sin/disobedience separated Adam and Eve from the close relationship that they had enjoyed with GOD.

There are those that argue that GOD is all-powerful and that He could have prevented Adam and Eve from sinning. But GOD gives mankind free will to obey or disobey.Otherwise, Satan could argue that we are just puppets in GOD’s hands and have no choice but to do GOD’s perfect will.Obviously, without exercise of free will, mankind’s decisions/choices can not glorify GOD.

Because GOD is omniscient (i.e., knows all things; can have no new thought), HE knew that Adam and Eve would fall and already had a plan to reconcile us back into a relationship with HIM.Although GOD reconciled Adam and Eve to a right relationship with HIM, their sin nature has passed on to each of us because sin is transferred through blood. We are all descendants of the first Adam and Eve and, therefore, their sin nature has been transferred down to us from them.Because we have received the sin nature through blood, we can only be healed by a blood transfusion.

The blood transfusion is the easy part for us.Before the death of Christ (we celebrate HIS birth at Christmas), the blood sacrifice to reconcile us to GOD was through sacrifice of animals. But GOD offered up a more perfect sacrifice through the death, burial and resurrection of HIS son, Jesus Christ.Since GOD chose that Jesus Christ be born in a virgin (Mary) and be conceived by GOD the Holy Spirit,His blood did not come from the first Adam and, therefore, it was not stained with the sin nature. Therefore, Jesus Christ could be offered up as a blood sacrifice, a blood transfusion if you will, to replace each person’s blood that is tainted by the sin nature.

And you say, “Well, since Christ was born of a virgin (Christmas celebration), lived a sinless life, was offered up as a blood sacrifice for our sins (the crucifixion; HE knew no sin but became sin for us on the cross), and was resurrected (Easter celebration; without HIS resurrection we could never be resurrected), then I am automatically saved from my sin.”NOT SO FAST; recall from above that GOD is a gentleman and He operates under the free will principle and that you are required to choose to accept HIM.Once you make this choice, you are justified by the blood that Jesus Christ, GOD’s son, shed for you.

How do you accept GOD’s offer to remove the tainted blood, the sin nature, that now diseases you? Please don’t make it difficult.Christ’s blood covers all sin, whether lying, stealing, murder, pride, adultery, choosing a mate that defies the laws of nature and GOD’s intended purpose, and so forth and so on.

Just pray this simple prayer.“Father GOD, I acknowledge that Jesus Christ is your son and I believe that you raised Him from the dead.I am a sinner and I am sorry for my sin.I accept that you died for my sin. Please forgive me of my sin and come into my heart.”

If you pray this simple prayer, then GOD accepts your exercise of free will to accept the substitutionary death of HIS son Jesus Christ and you are freed from the judgment of sin.AND, Jesus Christ will be your mediator, your lawyer, before GOD the Father when you enter into HIS courtroom.

GOD bless you!

PC BS.  It is your right and it is ok to be gay and it is my personal belief that you should be able to do whatever you want to do with your body.  With that said, It is your right and it is ok not to agree with those beliefs.

Problem is I don't think a lot of gay men, even those in long term relationships, want to get married.  Granted there are those that do and more power to them but gay men are still men and getting the hots to get married is not always a guy thing.

Also, the gay men I know as friends and also clients have too much sense to go into a game show type atmosphere to find a spouse.  Maybe they would compete like the  men do on Bachelorette shows but I don't see it.  Perhaps it would be different with lesbians since the ones I know, albeit not a large sample, appear to be more interested in partnering and marrying.

Also I think it would be hard to put together substantial audience that would get into things like hot tub kissing scenes.

TV is all about ratings and I just don't think this would work from a practical marketing point of view.

For what it is worth, the Spanish word for pervert is pervertido and it means the same thing in both languages.  Sorry Juan Pablo.

The world is in the process of major culture changes with regards to homosexuality. Gays, especially in the U.S., are making major strides in equal rights, marriage equality, media portrayal, and public opinion. These changes are happening probably more rapidly than any other major cultural change in history - I myself never imagined they would happen in my lifetime. So it's only natural that some people would have difficulty keeping up. Especially people who come from cultures that aren't moving as rapidly as you are in the U.S. This is putting the world a bit out of sync (e.g. Russia) and causing friction like the statement from Mr. Soccer Guy in this story. So I'm not saying that we should be accepting of ignorance. We should challenge it. But we should challenge it compassionately in the understanding that we're asking people to change a lifetime of thinking and moral conviction. And that ain't easy.  So let's not hang this guy. Let's educate him. Perhaps he will become another ally in our fight through this process. And if not, I'd always rather than our enemies be vocal and visible than silent and invisible. That way we know who to fight (and which battles to pick).

But it HAS already been done... I don't remember the network and I don't know how it ended.  They set this poor guy up to find his gay soul mate.  At some point they reveled that some of the guys competing where straight (I think they were actually competing for money... don't remember).  I don't believe in humiliating people. It was very sad.  Gay people beware... don't let this TV crap make a spectacle out of you.

@JimApplegate That'd odd, I could have sworn the moral of the story of Adam and Eve is woman will be the downfall of mankind and men should avoid them at all costs.

FYI:  The original text of the Bible doesn't condemn gay people.

MykNelsen

@JimApplegate  Good morning, first I am willing to bet that you have never read the original Bible, you have read a watered down or steroid adjusted version.  So please do not try to quote the book.  You said that, "Because GOD is omniscient (i.e., knows all things; can have no new thought)" So what is the new Testament, garbage?  Should we just throw it away?  Because in the old Testament says that slavery is okay, are we sinning because we don't have slaves? It says that if we find our wife is not a virgin on our wedding night, we are to take her to the doorsteps of her father and stone her to death, are we sinning because we don't do that?  It says that a rape victim is to marry their rapist, are we sinning because we do not force them to do that?

As a Christian, granted I am not a great one, that happens to be gay, I would like to thank you for trying your best to condemn me.  But unlike many other I will not say a bad thing about you, I hope you do find the true meaning of God, because you are living (or at least wanting people to believe) a perfect life in your tiny little world.

@JimApplegate My dear, cut the crap.  We read the Bible too and your interpretation is based on your legalistic and myopic view of what is actually written.  By the way no one will read your nonsense, it's really a lot of text, single spaced no less.

It is about equality. And having our relationships respected at law. Check the Canadian model. If you cohabitate with a lover of either sex you are as good as married. No ceremony necessary.

@GaySpanker I'm just saying that I respect Juan Pablo's opinion, but I don't share it regarding homosexuals being a bad role model or more perverted than heterosexuals, therefore I will quietly exercise my opinion by turning off The Bachelor this season.  Not trying to start an argument, just quietly exercising my free will to not be a part of the ratings for a Bachelor who has opinions that grossly differ from mine.

@MykNelsen@JimApplegateNot to turn this into a basic theology or bibliology discussion, but your references are without merit.  It is a false narrative to throw out a few levitical laws from the old testament and make the statement, "We don't do these things anymore, then everything else is suspect".  The OT laws were written precisely for the Abrahamic jews at that time.  The laws including the dietary laws were to set apart the jewish people as unique and God's nation at the time.  The purpose of the OT jewish nation was to bring other nations to God.

You're right in that man can't condemn you, but only God can.  However, God condemns us through his word (bible) and the conviction of his Holy Spirit.
