Millions of people tuned in to watch the season premiere of A&E’s Duck Dynasty Wednesday evening, even after the show’s star made controversial remarks about gays and African-Americans.

Duck Dynasty attracted 8.5 million viewers last night, according to The Hollywood Reporter, only 400,000 fewer than December’s Christmas special. Though the viewership was  far smaller than the 11.8 million viewers who tuned in for the record-breaking season 4 premiere, the show was still the most popular cable program of the evening.

Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson came under fire late last year for a GQ interview in which he compared homosexual behavior to bestiality and suggested African-Americans were better off in the Jim Crow era.  A&E briefly suspended him from the show before reinstating him for season 5.

The show’s fourth season attracted an average of 9.4 million viewers an episode. While last night’s premiere was the most popular cable show of the evening, it did not come close to FOX’s American Idol premiere, which brought in 15 million viewers on network television.

Odd. I have read on 2 other websites that the ratings were down over 3 million viewers from last season, and that A&E is "disappointed" in the big decline. The show is too scripted and boring. It's basically become a 30-minute infomercial. People got upset and jumped in to defend Phil because that's what the people in this country like to do. Pick a side and argue. Then a week later they move on and forget about it. Nothing new there.

If the liberals thought they had destroyed this show they were wrong. People like Alec Baldwin can say outrageous things & get away with it but the libs want to destroy & silence those they disagree with.

That ratings report is scary to thinking Americans, of which there are apparently 8.5 million less than I had hoped there would be.

I really don't think the Controversy had much too do with why the ratings where down. The DD Christmas special at 9 million that was before the controversy . It probably had to do with the time do year they aired August compared January there's a big deference between those two months. Remember dog he peaked at 2.9 and ran around 8 seasons than A&E dropped them for dropping the n bomb than CMT picked them up. With 8.5 million viewers your going to be seeing those beards for along time!!

@spiked_philly- Even this story shows the 3 million viewer decline. They just tried to put a more positive spin on it.
