Cracker Barrel Pulls About Face on ‘Duck Dynasty’ Merchandise

After fan complaints, restaurant chain reverses its decision to pull items from shelves

Less than two days after a Southern restaurant chain pledged to pull Duck Dynasty merchandise from its shelves, the company is reversing course, ABC News reports.

In a Facebook post, Cracker Barrel — the first major retailer to take a stance on Phil Roberston’s controversial statements — said it would continue to sell some Duck Commander merchandise but would continue to evaluate the products.

“When we made the decision to remove and evaluate certain Duck Dynasty items, we offended many of our loyal customers. Our intent was to avoid offending, but that’s just what we’ve done,” the company wrote in a Facebook post.

Earlier this week, the 67-year-old was suspended from his family’s hit A&E reality show after making anti-gay comments likening homosexuality to terrorism and bestiality in a print interview with GQ magazine.

Cracker Barrel is now off my list of place I like to eat when on a road trip. Sad because I have sat many times in a cracker barrel restaurant with my family while road trips, enjoying their home-style food and pleasant atmosphere. The big fire place, the old school candies in their country store all seem to remind us of a time when life was simpler and less politically correct. It used to signify the America we loved. Sadly no more. Now they are on the politically correct bandwagon. Pulling merchandise in response to someone exercising their first amendment right to speak their mind is not the America I want to live in. And to make it worse, they change their position again because now they know they are going to lose money from good hard working folks like myself. So what is their real motivation? Money. They aren't sorry for what they did. They are sorry we won't be eating there any more. They pulled the merchandise because they didn't want to miss out on a few dollars that gays might have spent in their restaurant, not because they were taking a moral stance. So now they have alienated both camps. Gays and non-gays alike. Smooth move Cracker Barrel. So, I for one, will never set foot in a Cracker Barrel again. I can live without country fried steak, biscuits and gravy and hash browns. I will find a good cup of coffee and a place to relax for a while before getting back on the road. If I want old school candy or toys I will order them online. For the time being I guess Waffle House will have to do. The food isn't as good, the atmosphere is not as pleasant, but I'll still be able to look at myself in the mirror when I'm done spending my heard earned money. Thank you Cracker Barrel for letting us all know what is really important to you. MONEY.

To all those who were outraged good for you. If you accept their apology and decide to return to their restaurant that is your choice. Just know that the only thing they care about is your money. They don't value your values nor do they appreciate your morals. They change their stance like a flag in the wind. Blowing whichever way makes them the most money. Wake up America, think for yourself and start voting with your wallets.

The great thing about this is that the few militant liberals who are upset about Cracker Barrel's correction of their mistake can go to the GLAAD website and choose from the few insignificant sponsors they have and do business with them.  We will not miss you when we are eating at Cracker Barrel!

When you defend "gay [sic] rights," here's what you're defending:

1) anal sex, and the horrible diseases that such a deathstyle leads to, like HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, and even resurgent, antibiotic resistant syphilis.
2) Coprophilia (that's eating feces), "Golden Showers" (urinating on someone's face) "Fisting" (placing one's fist into another's rectum), and "Bug Chasing" (deliberately engaging in activities that cause one to become HIV positive).
3) "Man-Boy 'Love'" - most homosexuals are pedophiles or have strong pederast (man and boy "relationship") tendencies.

Things Leviticus teaches are wrong in the bible, including being gay.

Phil chooses to believe the gay part, how many others does he ignore?

You really need to hold Phil Robertson to task not only over his quote about gay people, but about the disgusting things he said about black people -- that they were happy, happy, happy to be sharecropping before the era when they had their civil rights. His whitewashing of history is reprehensible.

I really don't understand what the big deal is at all. Phil Robertson is nothing more than the American version of a tribal peasant. His family just hasn't evolved yet. Believes in an all magical wizard living in the clouds, an evil looking red dude with horns and flaming talking bushes. Still clings to weapons like a Serengeti masai warrior and thinks that killing birds is macho and relevant in a modern world.  All traits that are throw backs to our primitive past.  How did he become an icon in what is considered right and wrong? Because he is rich?

I really can't see how any educated person would take him seriously.

Lets just forget this guy and move along.

Actually I don't care what this guy thinks.  But the main point within the political arena is that this definitely is NOT a first amendment issue.  The man is free to express his views from any venue that will have him.  But A&E is as much entitled to severe relations with what it considers bad, embarrassing or detrimental behavior as a shopkeeper is entitled to throw out people exhibiting bad, embarrassing or detrimental behavior.  All this flap over the cancellation over one insignificant show is just more political & media churn & nonsense. More distraction, more waste.

@thoughtcrimefactory Could you explain to us, please, exactly how much time you spend fantasizing about the types of sex acts gays might (or might not) be doing?  Is this preventing you from holding down a full-time job?  Have you applied for Social Security Disability?

Seriously, if you're spending all of your time fantasizing about gay sex, you've just outed yourself.  Those of us who are truly straight aren't actually thinking about gay sex, entirely because we'll be thinking about the kinds of sex we actually enjoy or might want to try.

By the way, it's a load of hooey when you insist that "most homosexuals are pedophiles" or have those interests.  This has no backing in science.  Actual research has shown that homosexual interest in young boys is actually quite rare.  It's only a few extreme right-wing blogs that seem to have this issue confused.  Pedophilia is a crime of opportunity, with predators raping whatever child is the most readily available.  Countless pedophiles have been married men in "traditional" heterosexual relationships, often with children of their own.  The whole "barely legal" porn industry capitalizes on straight men who are attracted to underage girls, but must settle for those who are only just of legal age in order to prevent going to prison.

Of course it's not a first amendment issue, except where you have groups like GLADD or whatever their acronym is that want people who don't agree with them silenced. It's an economic issue, that's FAR greater than any legal argument as Cracker Barrel found out in short order.

@JeanettaAnderson Sadly for you, the Christian faith is BS.  Jesus never existed.  The garden of eden never existed.  It's all made up crap to get and keep control over people.

How do I know this?  Simple: Science proved it.  Evolution and genetics proved that you can't propagate a species with just one man and one woman.  We know that didn't happen - ever.  Without the garden of eden, there was no original sin.  Without original sin, there's no need to be redeemed for an original sin that never happened.  Without a need for a redeemer, there's no need to believe in one.

It's all made up BS and it messes with people's heads so that they use the blatant and constant contradictions in the bible to rationalize and justify their own bigotry and intolerance.

Religion is bad for ya - ESPECIALLY one that's been proven to be false.

Try Buddhism.  It's got a lot of the concepts Jesus approved of without the hate the old testament encourages.

And unlike sexual orientation, RELIGION IS A CHOICE.

billybb

@Rachel421@thoughtcrimefactory

Christian love bears evil, but it does not tolerate it.

It does penance for the sins of others, but it is not broadminded about sin.

The cry for tolerance never induces it to quench its hatred of the evil philosophies that have entered into contest with the Truth.

It forgives the sinner, and it hates the sin; it is unmerciful to the error in his mind.

The sinner it will always take back into the bosom of the Mystical Body;
but his lie will never be taken into the treasury of His Wisdom.

Real love involves real hatred:
whoever has lost the power of moral indignation and the urge to drive the buyers and sellers from the temples
has also lost a living, fervent love of Truth.

Charity, then, is not a mild philosophy of "live and let live";
it is not a species of sloppy sentiment.

Charity is the infusion of the Spirit of God,
which makes us love the beautiful and hate the morally ugly.

@ChristopherWeingart @j45ashton  Apples & oranges.  This is a matter of contract law.  Most TV contracts have standard of conduct clauses.  Witness Charlie Sheen's departure from 2 1/2 Men.  Not sure what side of politics you're on but one of the GOP's favorite pastimes is playing word games.  If you're familiar with everything Robinson said you know he made very descriptive references to anal sex vs vaginal sex.  Those remarks were what got him booted.  Now someone might try to provide cover for him by saying...those are his religious views & these are constitutionally protected.  I once saw a pastor argue to a court that it had no jurisdiction to prosecute him for stealing church funds because of separation of church & state. Sure.  Comes down to this.  Stealing is stealing and vulgarity & grossness are vulgarity & grossness.  Bye-bye Robinson.

DeweySayenoff
DeweySayenoff

@Madd69@j45ashtonInasmuch as you think you have a fiscal point, the fact is, this is only a flap because evangelical Christians are, well, stupid.  They keep harping on this as if rights were trampled (they weren't) and as long as they're whipped into a self-righteous froth over it, the media will keep stirring the pot.

After all, if you can entice a demographic that just gives its money away to people who "serve" an invisible sky friend to keep reading your stuff  they'll keep seeing the ads and making the media folks that much more money.

I mean, what are these indignant people going to do?  Rise up and kill people because they don't like it?  God said, "Thou shall not kill".  Jesus said, "If a man demands your coat, give him your shirt as well." And my favorite one they keep forgetting (especially in light of your post) "A camel may pass through the eye of a needle before a wealthy man can enter the kingdom of heaven."

These are things Christians (Evangelical and otherwise) are SUPPOSED TO BELIEVE IN.  These folks, who have trouble with RINO's seem to be CINO's rather than REAL Christians.  And given what old Phil said, quoting from the old testament isn't really terribly Christian, since Jesus himself said what's taught in the Torah (from which the Old Testament came and why he didn't mesh well with the Pharisees) is mostly crap anyhow.

The significance of this is entirely in mindset of a believer.  When asking WWJD, he'd not condemn the man, but he'd not want the man spreading that kind of message around as doing so would be a sin in the eyes of God, who loves us all equally.

Or so goes the myth.

Given the way people act and conveniently ignore parts of their own religion, along with the scientific evidence proving it's a myth, I'm more inclined to say it's simply a convenient excuse for people to rationalize and justify feeling self-righteously smug about the hatreds and intolerance they want to feel anyhow.

But a big deal it is not.  400 million is chump change these days among the ruling elite.  Don't get your panties in a bunch about it.

@DeweySayenoff Jesus life and death is historically proven in Roman history, not just the bible. You are an idiot.

Also by the tenets of the law as established in this country, Jesus life and actions pass the test of veracity.

But

For those who are willing to see the whole world cries out of the Glory of God

To those who are not, no amount of proof is enough.

@DeweySayenoff

This is a SERIOUS misrepresentation and misunderstanding of what the Bible says. I mean, you aren't even CLOSE. Like most athiests, you want to break the Bible down into sound bites then attack that. It's the most intellectually dishonest way to debate anything.

Genesis makes it CLEAR that Adam and Eve were not the only people on earth. You don't know that because you know nothing about the Bible other than how to attack it. When Cain killed Abel he was ordered East of Eden to live in Nod, where he met his wife. The book of Genesis was written by Moses to give a cliff notes version of history to that point. It wasn't an all encompassing history of the world.

Nobody is redeemed for the 'original sin', they are redeemed for their OWN sins.

Jesus didn't exist? That's a new one since there is a secular historical record beyond the Bible of his existence. Almost NOBODY claims he didn't exist. The only thing debated is the veracity of his teachings, the reasons for his crusifiction, and whether the resurrection ocurred.

There are no 'blatant and constant contradictions' in the Bible. People love to make the claim, but it's simply not true.

@DeweySayenoff Take your pill, send in your Glaad dues,  and get happy, you have NO idea what you are talking about.

@Redeemed2 Some of us choose to live in a world that is based on science and reason.

Others choose to live in a world with magical, invisible beings who encourage them to cherry-pick a book that allows them to follow their meanest instincts.

Of the two, we're not the ones who have problems with analyzing and comprehending the world around us.  You are welcome to return to the Dark Ages, just don't blame us for not blindly following you.

@Madd69@DeweySayenoff@j45ashton Clarification the Torah IS the Pentateuch- the first 5 books of the old testament.  The Jewish bible is the rest of the old testament.

But for Dewy, Jesus continually quoted from the Torah and claimed he was here to fulfill the law not abolish it.

@DeweySayenoff@Madd69@j45ashtonI say again, you have zero idea what you're talking about. I suggest you spend some time actually studying the Bible before attempting to quote it.

Not only did Jesus NOT make reference to the Torah "being mostly crap" he was himself a practicing Jew. The Torah is the books attributed to Moses. The first 5 books of the Old Testament. It's not "what the old testament came from", it's simple a PART of the old testament.

Finally, you not only have no clue what the Bible says, you have no clue what Phil said, either. He WAS spreading the word of God. He wasn't judging or condemning homosexuals AT ALL.

Instead of frothing at the mouth every opportunity where you think you can legitimately attack Christianity, you'd be better served to first learn what it is you are talking about.

$400million is hardly 'chump change' to anyone and since when are the Duck Dynasty folks among "the ruling elite"?
