Oprah Winfrey, who often feels like the nation’s unofficial matriarch, says she never had children because “my kids would hate me.”

While her best friend was writing down potential baby names in seventh grade Home-Ec classes, “I was having daydreams about how I could be Martin Luther King,” Oprah told the The Hollywood Reporter in a recent interview.

“If I had kids, my kids would hate me,” she said. “They would have ended up on the equivalent of the Oprah show talking about me; because something would have had to suffer and it would’ve probably been them.”

Oprah does, however, play an important role in the lives of the young women enrolled in the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, often emailing with them about everything from tough life decisions to boy problems.
