Awards season moved into high gear with the Wednesday morning announcement of the 20th Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations. Here’s what you need to know:
Movies
The Shoo-Ins
12 Years a Slave earned four nomination — more than any other film: best ensemble cast (the equivalent of best film at the SAG awards), best male actor in a leading role for Chiwetel Ejiofor, best male supporting actor for Michael Fasbender and best female supporting actor for Lupita Nyong’o.
Dallas Buyers Club earned an ensemble nomination as well as nods for Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto.
Cate Blanchet got a nod for Blue Jasmine.
The Surprises
The Butler earned a surprise three nominations: one to Forrest Whitaker for best male actor, one to Oprah Winfrey for best female supporting actor and one for best ensemble cast.
No surprise that both Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts earned nods for August: Osage County, but given how competitive the year is, a full ensemble nod for the cast wasn’t expected.
The Snubs
Robert Redford, star of the nearly wordless All Is Lost, was snubbed in the best actor category.
Inside Llewyn Davis received no nominations in any category.
The Wolf of Wall Street also received zero nods.
Though Jennifer Lawrence was nominated for best supporting female actor for American Hustle and the cast got an ensemble nomination, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper and Amy Adams were all overlooked for individual nominations.
Television
The Shoo-Ins
Breaking Bad was going to get a lot of nods after its final season. Bryan Cranston and Anna Dunn both earned nominations, and the show was nominated for best ensemble cast, topping the television category.
The Netflix original series House of Cards continued to dominate the TV conversation with a nomination for Kevin Spacey.
Game of Thrones got three nods — one for Peter Dinklage, one for the whole cast and one for the stuntmen.
Veep got nods for Julia Louis-Dreyfus‘ beloved performance and for the cast as a whole.
The Surprises
Nominations for Jeff Daniels in The Newsroom isn’t as much a surprise, perhaps, as it is an injustice considering how many great drama actors were overlooked for the Daniels in the Aaron Sorkin show everyone loves to hate (see snubs below). Daniels got a nomination for best male actor, but the show didn’t get an ensemble nod.
Kerry Washington got a nod for Scandal for the first time in three seasons.
Don Cheadle is the dark horse in the best actor nominations for House of Lies.
Arrested Development was nominated for best ensemble cast and best male actor (Jason Batemen) despite lackluster reviews when the comedy re-premiered on Netflix this summer.
The Snubs
The Good Wife earned zero nominations.
For the first year in recent memory, Mad Men was overlooked entirely.
Masters of Sex, one of this year’s standout freshman dramas, also got no nods.
Nothing for the hit Neflix series Orange is the New Black.
Though Claire Danes earned a best female actor nod for Homeland, and the ensemble cast got a nod for a season that has plagued and infuriated viewers and critics alike, the best part of the show — Damian Lewis — didn’t get a nomination for best actor (perhaps because he spent so little time onscreen).
New Girl was snubbed in the comedies category.
Lena Dunham is out of the limelight with zero nominations for Girls this year.
