In this bizarre, dark farce, brothers Dorian (Luke Wilson) and Angus (Jake Busey) are both military chopper pilots. Charged by their monstrous, Medea-like mom (Catherine O’Hara) with putting the fear of God into their adulterous stepdad, they succeed all too well, and he drops dead of a heart attack. Mom still wants revenge on his unknown mistress. Dorian finds the young woman, a fast-food cashier named Sally (Drew Barrymore). Without telling Sally, who is pregnant, who he really is, Dorian falls in love with her, even as it becomes increasingly apparent that he needs to protect Sally from the rest of his homicidal family.
You might have expected the filmmakers to cast Owen Wilson as Luke’s brother, but it becomes clear that the role of Angus calls for the kind of crazy that only a Busey can bring. Screenwriter Vince Gilligan seems to be practicing for the desert surrealism and homicidal family dynamics that would characterize his work on TV’s Breaking Bad.
