As might have been guessed based on recent collaborations between MTV and Miley Cyrus, the singer’s appearance at the music network’s Nov. 10 European Music Awards produced plenty to tsk-tsk about. And, since the ceremony took place in Amsterdam, it’s also not so hard to guess how exactly she did that.

Upon winning the award for best video for her equally controversial “Wrecking Ball” clip, Cyrus — wearing a leotard and furry bolero — removed a joint from her purse and smoked it onstage. Though there’s no way to know exactly what was in the cigarette, the association between the ceremony’s location and marijuana culture is no secret — and Cyrus made use of the local coffee shops during her visit, according to the Daily Mail. (Contrary to popular belief, the drug is not actually legal in the Netherlands, but possession of small amounts is decriminalized; as MTV notes, however, smoking cigarettes in public places is illegal, so if the cigarette were tobacco it might cause problems too.)

American viewers, however, didn’t get to see what went down, as the network showed audience reaction for the U.S. airing of the awards event.

But that wasn’t the only thing that went down at the awards show:

Katy Perry also made a splash on the red carpet by wearing some new jewelry on her left ring finger, fueling rumors that she and John Mayer may be on the way to a wedding, and on stage by performing her song “Unconditionally” from high above the arena, suspended from the ceiling. She also made a literal splash when her victory in the Best Female category apparently surprised her mid-swallow, causing her to spit out a mouthful of champagne.

Will Ferrell showed up too…sort of. The actor came in character as Ron Burgundy, promoting the December-release Anchorman 2 and providing a clueless glimpse of the host city:

And finally, while this wasn’t actually a moment from the ceremony, MTV announced that next year’s EMAs will be held in Glasgow.
