Katy Perry's social media success has been attributed to the buzz around the launch of her new album, Prism.

Justin Bieber dropped down a notch on the Twitter pecking order over the weekend as Katy Perry beat him to become the social network’s most popular user.

Perry boasted 46.48 million Twitter followers on Sunday,  according to CNBC, edging ahead of Bieber’s 46.47 million — which isn’t bad really, considering it’s only slightly less than the entire population of Spain.

But some are questioning just how many followers of both singers are real. StatusPeople reckons more than 40% of Bieber’s Twitter fans are fake, compared to 52% of Perry’s.

Bieber took over the most-followers title nine months ago, ending Lady Gaga’s two-year reign.  Seven of the ten most followed Twitter users are musical artists, while the remaining three are Instagram, YouTube and U.S. President Barack Obama, according to CNBC.

Twitter is expected to go public on the New York Stock Exchange on Nov. 7.

Speculation: She made up the Mick Jagger hit-on-me revelation for publicity last week and it worked. However, I wouldn't know, it's just a thought. And I'm commenting on this? The world needs a little nonsense, even Shakespeare said it.

OK, I'm ashamed of myself for even looking at this story. But 46 million people actually want to get tweets from them? Unbelievable. The latest sign of the apocalypse.
