Electronic musician James Blake won the Mercury Prize on Friday for his second album Overgrown.
The prize, which is awarded every year to the best British or Irish album from any genre, was announced in a ceremony at London’s Roundhouse. Blake, who was also a contender in 2011, beat out favorites like David Bowie, the Arctic Monkeys and Laura Mvula to claim the prize.
“I feel jubilant and confused, wonderful,” Blake, 25, told The Independent after his win. “It’s a moment you don’t expect to happen to you, in fact you might even bet against it if you’re British.”
It’s likely that Blake felt slightly less jubilant earlier in the evening, when the Mercury Prize ceremony host accidentally introduced him as “James Blunt,” the British crooner, who’s known for his easy radio hits. Hopefully, the inadvertent mistake was forgotten once Blake won.
