The Simpsons plans to retire the character of world-weary teacher Edna Krabappel, following the death of voice actress Marcia Wallace
Executive producer Al Jean said after Wallace’s death Friday that he “was tremendously saddened” an that Wallace “was beloved by all at ‘The Simpsons’ and we intend to retire her irreplaceable character,” Vulture reports. The 70-year-old actress had given Ms. Krabappel her distinctive voice — and monosyllabic laugh — for the past 23 years and helped turn the crabby teacher into one of the show’s funniest and most endearing characters.
Jean said Ms. Krabappel’s retirement would have nothing to do with a previous announcement that a long-running Simpsons character would be killed off. “This was not Marcia’s Edna Krabappel,” he said. “Marcia’s passing is unrelated and again, a terrible loss for all who had the pleasure of knowing her.”
