After seven years at the famed opera house La Scala in Milan, the BBC reports that 70-year-old Daniel Barenboim will be stepping down as musical director at the beginning of 2015 — two years before his contract is set to expire.

La Scala’s general manager Stephane Lissner announced the upcoming departure while dubbing it “the end of an era.” (Lissner himself will be leaving La Scala for the Paris Opera next summer.)

According to the BBC, Barenboim will continue working on other projects, “including establishing an academy for Israeli and Palestinian musicians and overseeing an academy for young musicians in Berlin, housed in a concert hall built by architect Frank Gehry.” His replacement at La Scala is expected to be chosen next month.
