Paul McCartney Comes To Miley Cyrus’s Defense

Former Beatle says he doesn't understand the outrage over twerking star

Just when it seemed like everyone in the music industry – from Sinead O’Connor to Sufjan Stevens - had a problem with Miley Cyrus, the controversial singer got an unexpected champion in her corner. Former Beatle Paul McCartney defended both Cyrus’s racy ‘Wrecking Ball’ video and her twerking performance at the MTV VMAs during an interview with Sky News in the UK.

“I don’t think it was explicit at all. You couldn’t see anything,” McCartney told Sky News when asked about Cyrus’s video. “I watched it as an experiment to check, but you look at it and you say, ‘What’s everyone shouting about?’ She’s a young girl – she’s like only 20 or something – and she’s just having a go. Someone said to me that the world that people like Miley live in is all noise and they’ve got to get above the noise. So they’ve got to do something.”

As for the infamous MTV VMA performance that caused an uproar among parents and pundits, Macca said he couldn’t understand the backlash.  “I think it was only mildly shocking,” he told Sky News. “She was dancing with Robin Thicke at the awards. So what? C’mon, we’ve all seen worse than that.”

Hilarious, these comments. Just hilarious. I've just two comments:

1. People can say whatever they like about Paul McCartney's musical talents, but nobody can deny the fact that he was 50% responsible for the production and sale of tens of millions of albums. (Some of the Lennon/McCartney songs were mostly John, admittedly, but others were mostly Paul. Do some proper research before quoting one throwaway line on this!)

2. What sort of opinions should one expect from a country where it's perfectly acceptable to show people getting shot dead on live news or following police car chases that often end in tragedy, yet when a performer shows a nipple for two seconds during the Superbowl all hell breaks loose and the station gets sued for hundreds of millions? I've reached the conclusion that the Native Americans were making a much better job of running the place before the millions of idiots showed up. (But no doubt Sarah Palin will be back soon to prove me wrong.... LOL)

Yeah, right. Hey Paul, don't you remember back in the 60's, you guys didn't even curse if you knew a mic was within 50 feet of you (by you I mean all of you guys, Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Animals, etc.) That's because there was a thing called decorum back then. Miley's video back then would have been banned as pornography.

It's liberal idiots like you who have dragged down society, little by little, proclaiming the whole time, "What's the big deal?" In a few years it will be a 12 year old doing it and you'll still be saying "What's the big deal?" Idiots, all of you.

We are evolving into a very sick hyper-critical society. She is just a kid going a little wild like countless other stars have.

The news media also seems not to realize that Internet "buzz" about anything is extremely skewed-- they report it like it meant something real (which then tends to actually make it real).

Internet comment sections, Facebook groups, etc are havens for trolls, bullies and sociopaths-- not a good place to start a news story from.

The news media has gotten into the strange habit of starting stories and media-dramas based on patterns of Internet comments when the percentage of bullies, trolls, sociopaths etc who inhabit these venues is very high.

The key phrase is that "she's 20 or something."  That's been my point the entire time.  she's rich, famous and incredibly young.  of course she's gonna do dumb stuff.  no drug problems,  no DUIs and no legal problems.  Nothing to see here.

Paul McCartney is senile, and probably has the onset of dementia, and doesn't know what he's saying.  Miley Cyrus has succeeded in turning "Hannah Montana" into "Hannah HIV+."

If you're shocked by Cyrus, you don't get out much. Paul didn't say (and it doesn't look like he was asked) if she is talented. He wasn't asked if he thinks she is a talented musician. I'm confident of his answer if he was asked. He would fall out of his chair laughing. She's a joke and a bad joke at that. But if you're shocked by her, the joke is on you.

Here we have lots of vocal talent but we also have a talented drug addict and a teenaged streetwalker and this is OK? Talent never over rides character! Neither can have all the talent and money in the world but neither has class! Disgusting!

There was NOTHING explicit about Miley's performance on the VMAs.  This was all media hype.

Paul McCartney mustn't have a problem with his 10yo daughter watching any music video she likes, because, "C’mon, we’ve all seen worse than that."

Actually you are right Paul, I saw 'Deep Throat' and 'Devil in Ms Jones' along with a few other porn films.  So yeah, Paul, Miley was not explicit but she was TALENTLESS.

Miley can't dance, body looks like Justin Beiber and her nasty tongue was coated.  She did not even have sense to brush her tongue.  Thosefaults are worse than explicit.

sir Paul, your comment goes down with Celine Dion's comment that she made during the riots in LA. when the Rodney King disaster was tearing part LA. (I believe it was then). She called into The Larry King Show and 'defended' the looters who were breaking into stores and hauling out everything they could carry in their arms and carts : ""they(looters) just want to touch things" so give them a break......"they're not bad people"--she added. The common thread is "selfishness" and we don't anymore of it from anyone....feeding it to minors should be a crime.

Not a surprising opinion from one in the media spotlight for so many years. Just shows how brainwashed society has become, one step at a time for shock value until it becomes the new norm.  Performers are in the forefront of this movement, which would have been better stopped before it began.   Leaving something to the imagination is far more titillating than throwing the obvious in your face! Along with instant gratification seems to come society's demand for imagery that doesn't require much (or any) thought to complete the picture.  We seem to be more like the bonobo every day - not a good thing!

Or perhaps people like Miley do not live in all noise, but rather a vacuum and everyone outside the vacuum makes all the noise for them.

@VALONA4REAL  Dude! I hope you speak more coherently than you write! As for Miley, her recent "performances" are obviously intended to grab as much shock value attention as possible. Kind of pathetic really, but it is a tried and true formula. Just ask Madonna or Lady Googoo. Paul's point is on target. We've all seen this act before. Nothing new or original to see here. Move along.

@AckBlauvelt And what has the decorum of the 60's to do with them? Just because they lived under it doesn't mean that they wanted to follow it, which is why they tried to change it. Lennon and Morrison might be good examples. And I wouldn't say it's a good argument to compare with something that was 50 years ago. Then we can compare the 60's to the 1910's, when Stravinsky caused controversy because of his orthodox arrangements and how the dancer danced herself to death in the end.

AckBlauvelt

One more thing to prove my point. Remember in "Help!", as Chris Farley might have said, when you were playing the girl like a bass, and you accidentally, just barely brushed the side of her breast? Remember the look of embarrassment on your face? And now we've come to this but it doesn't bother you at all. Nice.

@JohnLopez1

And how many pop-artists over 40 cares about having a "hit record on the radio" nowadays anyway?

And I guess your family have its roots in GB - at least the majority of your nation has it. It would maybe have been better if Columbus didn't "found" America, so the brits and french couldn't go there, right?

@a.gentleman49 LETS SEE IF PAUL MCARNETY WOULD ALLOW HIS DAUGHTER TO ACT LIKE A PIG ON STAGE

SIR PAUL WOULD NEVER EMBARASS THE QUEEN !

NevilleRoss

@gizmo2010: Complain to the FCC, tell them to rescind the law allowing Clear Channel and other media big shots the right to have as many stations as they want, and trust me, when radio stations are owned by independent people that care about music, then you won't have to be hearing (or seeing) people like Miley Cyrus. Or you can do what I do and not listen to commercial radio (listener-supported music radio is better.)

NevilleRoss

@RosemaryTime: What Paul's daughter is like is none of your business; grow the frack up, and try and live in the 21st century.

@JohnLopez1 @a.gentleman49 Did you or did you not read the article? McCartney has no problem with it, and presumably wouldn't have a problem with Heather being that way as well (if she was a pop star.)
