Actor Charles Hunnam (L) and his guest attend the Broadcast Television Journalists Association Second Annual Critics' Choice Awards at The Beverly Hilton Hotel on June 18, 2012 in Beverly Hills, California.

One month after being cast to play Christian Grey in the upcoming film adaptation of the erotically-charged novel 50 Shades of Grey, Charlie Hunnam is out, Universal Pictures and Focus Features announced Saturday in a joint statement.

Hunnam, the star of the FX series Sons of Anarchy, was named the co-lead beside Dakota Johnson in September, not without some controversy.

Though the official statement is that Hunnam’s TV-filming schedule would have been too tight, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the actor may have gotten cold feet and been overwhelmed by the attention the role received.

Shooting was scheduled to begin in November, with a release date of Aug. 1, 2014.
