Most people watch the MTV Video Music Awards to see the musical performances and find out which of the year’s music videos will take home prizes.Bbut, during last night’s VMAs in Brooklyn, fans of the hit young-adult series Divergent had another reason to tune in. The first real trailer (as opposed to a quick teaser) for the Divergent movie aired during the pre-show.
As those who were awaiting the trailer might have expected, it includes plenty of action for its young stars (Shailene Woodley and Theo James) and dystopian pronouncements from Kate Winslet.
For those who haven’t read the trilogy by Veronica Roth on which the movie is based, the trailer makes an attempt at explaining the books’ complicated mythology: In the future, people are sorted by personality in order to be best subjugated by society. Woodley’s character, Tris Prior, is, however, ‘Divergent’ — someone not easily sorted and thus a threat. It’s a little much to explain in just a little more than a minute… but, knife-throwing!
Divergent is due in theaters on March 21, 2014.
