Ben Affleck as Batman: Seven Reasons Fans Are Unhappy

News that the star will be the next dark knight has inspired a frenzy of complaints

Actor Ben Affleck during the 60th San Sebastian International Film Festival on Sept. 22, 2012, in San Sebastian, Spain.

After months of speculation and rumors about who would next play the Caped Crusader, it was announced late Thursday that Batman will be none other than Ben Affleck.

Warner Brothers said the Argo star will take on the role in the upcoming Man of Steel sequel from director Zack Snyder. Fans have known since this year’s Comic-Con that the Steel follow-up will feature not only Henry Cavill as Superman but also his fellow DC Comics vigilante Batman. And based on the suggested source material (the comic The Dark Knight Returns), it’s been thought that whoever would fill Bruce Wayne’s bodysuit would have to go head-to-head with Cavill when the two classic heroes battle it out.

With all that anticipation (and coming off Christian Bale’s acclaimed run as Batman) online reactions to the news that Affleck has the job have been unsurprisingly vocal, and largely negative. Here are seven reasons why, according to the Twitter-verse, it is the duty of every good citizen of Gotham to criticize Ben Affleck:

7. The hashtag “#BetterBatmanThanBenAffleck” still leaves you 113 characters to make a suggestion

6. The world has not yet forgotten Gigli

(MORE: Christian Bale to Play Moses)

6b. …or Daredevil

5. A more interesting choice would have been to have him direct

4. This casting move is only okay if Matt Damon plays Robin

(WATCH: Batman Theme Song Performed by Bats)

3. Gotham isn’t Boston

2. He’s not Richard Dreyfuss

1. Because of Twitter

On a larger level, the heated reaction to Affleck’s casting news exposes one of the  problems with gauging public opinion using Twitter. It’s a great medium for expressing extreme excitement and an even better medium for expressing derision (after all, a quippy one-liner is more fun to write than “OMG!” is). Because Affleck’s casting is unexpected but not totally crazy — he’s already a major star — the positive reactions to the news so far are mostly along the lines of “he could do a good job,” which is not a very interesting thing to say on Twitter.

Not that that’s stopping some people:

@TIME The only bad thing that came of Gigli, for me, is all the failed comics who crawled out of their dumpsters to bash it.

@TIME I think this is absourd. Daniel Craig didn't like as 007, when we saw casino royale we have loved his interpretation.

He really sucked as the Green Lantern.

Now, if they would just cast, Ralphie May, as Alfred, the butler.

@TIME Ben Affleck won an Oscar at 25 yrs of age. "Gigli" is a blip on the radar. He''ll b just fine as the Batman.

Are people forgetting what happened at the end of the last Batman?! I thought Robin, played by Joeseph Gordon Levitt, was taking over as Batman.

I wonder how Warner Bros. is going to handle this; if only they could take a page out of Marvel's book. So far this whole Batman vs. Superman idea seems like it may burst the bubble of superhero movies.

There was only ever one Batman:  Adam West.....

bale turned down 50 mill to play as batman as he did not want to ruin a brilliant trilogy with a crappy spin off, i want nothing more then an awesome batman/superman movie, personally i would rather see them work together and create a build up for an up coming justice league movie, i really hope afflek pulls it off but i'm scared hes going to be cheesy, and just ruin the whole batman reputation, it took years to build it back up after clooney made a royal mess off things in batman and robin :(

Ben is a great actor, but just don't let him be THE BATMAN I'm afraid he will mess up the whole Dark Knight Trilogy. I hope Christian Bale returns. Christopher Nolan please don't mess this up for us Dark Knight Fanatics.

I am in favor of Mr. Ben Affleck as The Batman he is a brilliant actor the grit and hard straight line Doug MacRay: Town (2010) was amazing and full of compassion and steal because in this character he fleshed out with the help of himself because he was the director the film was beyond remarkable and awe inspiring and I do think, not believe and know he could bring this power to Batman! Mark Steven Johnson directing in Daredevil (2003) let down the fans not Ben! Anybody who understands cinematic traffic should really know this fact! Unlike the guy in Ludlow, KY a mister John Roden who claims " His acting skill is not even close to being believable as Bruce Wayne and he won't do the role justice. He's not built, nor is he intimidating enough for the role of Batman. His portrayal of Daredevil was atrocious and he's not remotely close to an action star. Please find someone else." I guess Mr. Roden did not see or understand Argo which was a piece of film heaven on a celluloid lollipop! And let us not Forget Hollywoodland where Mr. Affleck brought home the acting juice as George Reeves that was heartbreaking and the only word to use Super because he was just that Large and Powerful. I thought he would have made an awesome Superman in a Major Motion Picture! So as a amateur actor and lover of film and fan of heroes! Please Let it Be Ben as BATMAN!
P.S he is Built and quite sexy lol more than some other Dark Knight Wannabes

People WORLWIDE have SPOKEN! 50,000 signed PETITIONS in 1 day! NO Ben BATMAN!

Point 1: STOP COMPARING Aflac to other actors who can act--Keaton, Ledger(rip), etc.
Point 2: Those actors didn't have the HUGE FAME NEGATIVE BAGGAGE Aflac has (horrific Gigli, Daredevil, Bad taste in women JLo ghetto, gambling and arrogant persona, etc. etc.)!

They shouldn't be doing that with Batman. Why bring a great movie down? Affleck doesn't have the wits for it. Such a horrendous immature decision. This will rate the next movie PG 13 !!

Boooo!!  Affleck just doesn't have the acting chops or gravitas of Christian Bale.

Hes matured, I could see him pulling it off, but all it will take is one cheesy scene to spoil the entire film.

@Kmac198 @aboutbebout  The question is why are you so concerned about this role?  Me thinks you're a bit too attached for your age.  Ben Affleck is very tall and striking in person.  He'll be a perfect compliment to Harry.  Remember, it's only a movie.
