Today’s Movie Trailer: Pompeii

Saying it involves a volcano isn't really a spoiler, is it?

It’s the rare epic disaster movie in which the result of the central apocalyptic event is already known to anyone familiar with the basics of world history. But when your movie is called Pompeii, it’s pretty obvious what will happen at the end: Mt. Vesuvius erupted and destroyed the Roman city nearly 2,000 years ago, so it’d be hard for the filmmakers to keep that one a secret.

Which is a good thing, considering the new teaser trailer for the upcoming movie starts with falling ash and the famous ‘frozen’ people of Pompeii, stuck in the poses they held at the moment that the volcano destroyed the city.

But the movie isn’t all ash. There’s also people making out and fighting — and lots of explosions. The movie, directed by Resident Evil‘s Paul W.S. Anderson, is about an enslaved man trying to get home to Pompeii to save his loved ones. It stars Sleeping Beauty‘s Emily Browning, Game of Thrones‘ Kit Harington, The Matrix‘s Carrie-Anne Moss and 24‘s Kiefer Sutherland.

Pompeii is due in theaters on Feb. 21, 2014.
