Houston’s success in the music industry eventually lead to offers to appear in films. In 1992, she starred, alongside Kevin Costner, in The Bodyguard, playing a star who hires private security to protect her from a stalker. It was one of the first interracial romance movies that did not make race a focal point of the film. While some critics panned Houston’s performance, the film was box office success, earning more than $410 million worldwide. One of Houston’s contribution to the film’s soundtrack, a cover of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You,” quickly become one of her most memorable hits, winning Grammys for Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal.
