After what happened to Molly Ringwald’s screen sister in Sixteen Candles, not to mention what Ringwald did to that vintage prom dress in Pretty in Pink, you’d think it would be wise never to plan Ringwald’s own wedding, much less to allow her to design her own bridal gown. (The creation she comes up with, which includes a white silk top hat, would give Vera Wang a heart attack.) Ringwald’s dad, contractor Alan Alda, wants to throw a lavish bash, but he doesn’t exactly have the cash, and the house he’s building on spec for a mobbed-up relative (why is that a running theme here?) is turning into a featherbedded money pit. Said relative (Joe Pesci) does find Alda some cheap tents for the outdoor reception.
Too cheap, it turns out, once the downpour hits. A few loose threads, and the whole mess falls apart, causing a flash flood that sweeps away the cake and the catered dinner. Fortunately, they’re on Long Island, so delivery pizza is just a phone call away. If that weren’t enough, one of the Mafiosi (courtly, scene-stealing Anthony LaPaglia) is courting RIngwald’s sister (her Brat Pack pal Ally Sheedy). Please, prays Alda: Let them elope.
