Of the many all-star road-trip and scavenger-hunt movies that have followed the skid marks of It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World, this one is the best. Which isn’t saying much, but at least it works nicely, with a minimum of fuss or mean-spiritedness. Here, Monty Python alumnus John Cleese is the eccentric casino tycoon who sets the chase in motion, sending treasure hunters (including Whoopi Goldberg, Seth Green, Jon Lovitz, Kathy Najimy, Rowan Atkinson, and Cuba Gooding Jr.) bouncing across the Southwest while he makes book on which of them will get to the loot first. Keeping the gags coming at a rapid-fire pace is director Jerry Zucker (part of the team behind Airplane!, Top Secret, and the Naked Gun movies). For all the frenetic activity, the existential stakes seem lower than in Mad World; this is just silly fun for its own sake.
