He said he would be back—and in his new movie, The Last Stand (Jan. 18), Arnold Schwarzenegger does return to the action-movie genre that made him a household name. He stars alongside Johnny Knoxville as a sheriff trying to stop a drug cartel boss from crossing the border into Mexico. In addition to the sheriff stars, the movie’s got guns and car chases and one-liners up the wazoo.

In this week’s issue of TIME, available to subscribers here, Schwarzenegger speaks about whether he’ll ever retire, how to acknowledge personal mistakes and what it’s like to go from being an action star to the Governor of California and back again.
