Douglas Wolk’s list of the Top 10 Songs of 2012 ranges from a hidden treasure, Can’s “Graublau” — a newly edited, 17-minute garage rock from a 1969 German film — to more mainstream tunes. The viral hit “Gangnam Style” by Psy and Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” near the top of the list — where they belong given the sheer amount of Internet memes they have inspired. In fact, you can even listen to both at the same time, thanks to one mashup. This month, Google revealed to TIME that “Gangnam Style” was also the top-trending U.S. lyrics search of 2012, probably because fans were trying figure out the meaning of the catchy Korean lyrics — and perfect their invisible horse dance moves at the same time.
@TIME a billion of visitors has seen that guy dancing; it‘s not the most intelligent song, but 2012 will be musically remembered for psy...
@TIME In Venezuela there are currently emptiness of being able: President and Vice President in Cuba. #TellTheTruthAboutChavez
@TIME OhThxGod ImRtRoyallySickOfPsy & HisNuttsyInvisibleHorseDance SheeshWhatADweeb & HeHasTheWholeWorld Bob'gUp&DownLikeTheIdiotsTheyAre!!
@TIME yea I loved call me maybe so much!it was like a gift then and it always lift ma heart:like make me 4get I had issues!!!Carly we luv ya
There was no "best of" this year...When you have novelty/bubblegum songs like Gangnam Style and "call me maybe" in the top ten of any "best of" list for the year, it just goes to show how pathetically low the state of the music indistry has really gone and the crap that the music buying public are willing to waste their money on.
@TIME number one song of the yr shuld b anything by bruno mars or adelle!! They both rock. Or resurrect a michael jackson or elvis song. Duh
@TIME If Gangnam or Call Me Maybe is NOT the choice then TIME is as out of tune with America as the Rebpublicans are!
@TIME It seems that whoever compiled this list gets their taste in music from the same place your reporters get their journalistic integrity
@TIME HOWCOME we fire a CEO or Coach who can't manage employees or players but don't impeach Presidents who can't manage Congress?
@TIME And yet PSY's picture is still on the cover of that article, Gangnam Style *should* be the song of the year. :P
@tfleming2566 "Call Me Maybe" isn't a novelty, it's a genuinely good song. And good songs can come from ANY genre. I don't know that it's necessarily the BEST song of the year, but it's a damn good one and it deserves at least some placement on the list. Maybe, just maybe, you're just an old coot who doesn't appreciate new music anymore. People have been saying the same thing you just said for decades. Even during the hayday of the Beatles people were lamenting the days of good music.
@ArmChairPundit1 @TIME what? Please read what impeachment is. Clinton was impeached... for what many who impeached did. Newt zip up...
The fact that people like you actually think that "call me maybe" is a good song just goes to show how poor peoples taste in music is these days. 5 years from now, nobody will even remember that stupid song or really any other song thats been released in recent memory. The days of genuinely good and timeless music pretty much ended with the 1980's. Back then you actually had to actually had to have talent to make it in the music industry unlike these days where all you have to have is a gimmick and a quick, catchy, disposable hit. Everything after the 80'shas either been sampling of everything before that or quick forgettable hits that end up as end of the year punchlines when people try to figure out how and why it ever became a hit in the first place..It's sad really...They don't make quality, timeless music anymore./...and honestly, why should they when people don't know any better and are willing to accept novelty songs like "call me maybe" as quality music. The music industry pumps out the simple, watered down music, and you fall for it hook, line and sinker....
@Letstalkturkey1 @TIME in Obama's case Impeachment for being incompetent. He demands his way or no way like a dictator.
