Elf life ain’t easy, at least according to the Barenaked Ladies’ 2004 song “Elf’s Lament.” The humorous song appears on the 2004 Barenaked for the Holidays alongside other original songs and classics. The track is typical Barenaked Ladies fare: cute and quirky, with a singsong chorus featuring lines like “I make toys, but I’ve got aspirations.” Because he’s an elf who has to work for a living—get it? Fellow Canadian Buble doesn’t show up until a minute in, but he’s no stranger to the holidays, having released his own Christmas album in 2011. The duets on his Christmas album are a bit more traditional: The Puppini Sisters and Shania Twain. At least he’s not struggling to harmonize with M.I.A. and Ke$ha this time.
