The mystery surrounding Benedict Cumberbatch’s role in J.J. Abrams’s Star Trek Into Darkness continues.

The star of PBS’s Sherlock has debunked the rumor that he’s playing Khan, a genetically engineered tyrant and the main enemy in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, and says he will instead be playing a terrorist named John Harrison.

So what’s this guy like? The British actor has been vague, but he told Access Hollywood that Harrison is “not your two-dimensional cookie cutter villain” and hopes viewers will even empathize with the character: “He has a purpose and it’s hard not to see his point of view at certain points.” That may be because Harrison’s motives are “personal,” the British actor told MTV:

“He has extraordinary physical powers, but also mental powers. He can sow an idea, which is as powerful as gunshots or close-hand combat, which he’s masterful in. He tears into the fabric of both the world and the Enterprise family, and he leaves behind him a trail of devastation.”

Ahead of the thriller’s opening on May 17, 2013, fans can now see a 9-minute preview before select IMAX screenings of The Hobbit — which is probably more satisfying than the minute-long teaser for film that came out on Dec. 6. The full trailer will be released on Monday.

Idiots. It's already been confirmed for days that he's playing a character called John Harrison.....

@zeppelyn You're a bigger idiot since Orci said ages ago he's a canon character that the franchise followers are aware of, so neeeener.

Seriously, I really think hes playing Jean Luc Picard at this point.Let's examine: JJ Abrams is just crazy enough to do something like this.-In the first movie he blew up Vulcan. He does not care about radically changing cannon. I see a vision of JJ and his writing staff sitting around asking "What is the craziest thing we can come up with? Who cares if it upsets some people?"-They have said they want the audience to relate to the bad guy and his motives. What could do so more effectively than taking a beloved character and turning him dark (assuming they can come up with a compelling and understanding way of making Jean Luc's altered history compel him to doing something so terrible.)-Abrams would love to do something that would get everyone showing up to work with the ultimate water cooler talk to spread awareness of the film like a virus, getting more and more people in seats to buy tickets for a plot line so out of the box insane that it tops anything they did in the first movie.-Khan as the villain? Boring. BORING. Some no name character from the original series that made a single episode appearance ? Even more boring. The real villain has to be well known enough by viewers lesser invested in Star Trek franchise to have broad mass appeal. The Benicio Del Toro audition rumor is nothing but a clever way of throwing everyone off base to keep the surprise. That's the REAL disinformation.-Is that a receding hairline on Cucumberpatch I see? He is also clearly has experience with Starfleet, and is in uniform at some point. I have no doubt the character will be infiltrating Starfleet under the name of John Harrison until his true identity and motive is discovered by the protagonists.-In the trailer he says "I have returned," I think we are misinterpreting the use of the word returned. He could easily be talking about returning to the past from an altered timeline. So that just leaves us with motive. Why is a young JLP time traveling to wreck havoc on the past? I would speculate he is trying to save his own future and the people he is responsible for with an act which would be perceived as vigilante heroics by some, and terrorism by others. It is commentary on the nature of perception when it comes to violent action being taken. The new Kirk and crew is going to do something that Jean Luc will desperately trying to prevent, or at least get revenge for.Or maybe its just Khan, *yawn*.LIKE MY POST AND LINK IT ON SOCIAL MEDIA!
