Here’s a twofer: Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen play Les Miz‘s source of dark comedy, the Thénardiers, and they’ve already done a musical together. Both appeared in the 2007 movie version of Sweeney Todd. Given the material, it’s a little hard to tell where their singing abilities end and their character choices begin—are her voice around 0:27 and his around 2:20 accurate representations of the actors’ abilities or just reflections of the way they think their characters would sing?—but that’s a good match for their latest musical foray: their voices are good enough, but it’s the acting-while-singing that the Thénardiers need to make “Master of the House” a show-stopper.
