We start at the end: a shocking double murder and suicide, played out in reverse motion. Then we get the backstory: a naive evangelist from Minnesota (Paul Rudd) travels to Florida with his supportive wife (Kate Arrington) to start a new business, opening a chain of gospel motels. Once there, they encounter an emotionally and physically scarred next-door neighbor (Michael Shannon), a talkative exterminator (Ed Asner) and a lesson in the cruel shocks that a fallen world can inflict on the faithful. Craig Wright’s play (superbly directed on Broadway by Dexter Bullard) can be facile at times, but it casts a doomy spell that never lets up.
