Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Blake in The Dark Night Rises

Get ready, Gotham. Despite the actor’s protests a few months ago that such stories were not correct, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is now rumored to be the next Batman. According to Drew McWeeny at HitFix—or, rather, his anonymous source—Gordon-Levitt will “absolutely” take on the role in the upcoming 2015 Justice League movie.

Spoilers for The Dark Knight Rises below.

(MOREBehold: The Lego Batcave of Your Dreams)

The Justice League rumor mill is a fertile one—as befits a film featuring Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Aquaman and the Flash—and the success of the much-hyped The Avengers (Avengers:Marvel::Justice League:DC) raises expectations that the movie’s promotion will start early and start strong. For example, we already know courtesy of The New York Post that Zack Snyder’s June 2013 Man of Steel may be the first movie to introduce the Justice League universe to filmgoers. The most recent HitFix news also suggests that, given the precedent for superheroes popping up in other heroes’ movies, the super-early casting of JGL, before Justice League even has a director, may be due to the possibility of a Batman appearance in the Superman movie. (At the moment, Gordon-Levitt doesn’t appear on the Man of Steel cast list, but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen.)

The news is not that shocking. Even though the Christopher Nolan Dark Knight franchise is officially kaput, hints of Gordon-Levitt’s future were easy to see in this past summer’s The Dark Knight Rises. No, Gordon-Levitt didn’t play Bruce Wayne, but his character got a big reveal—his real first name is Robin, and he discovers the Batcave at the end of the film. The extent of Justice League’s connection to the Dark Knight universe is still unclear; a non-Wayne Batman might confuse some viewers, but it could be even more confusing to have one franchise’s Robin show up as another’s Batman.

UPDATE: According to Entertainment Weekly, Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s people have denied the rumor.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt isn't going to be Batman. If you didn't get the hint in 'The Dark Knight Rises' he is Robin.

Well, the way i see it. I think The Dark knight should be held to Christian Bale I was thinking (the end of Dark Knight Rises) Robin instead of taking the new Batman persona takes to Robin instead and maybe Batman returning and maybe Robin becoming Nightwing later on, i still think Christopher Nolan has room for 2 other movies, its just wont be Christian Bale being the protagonist anymore. And since a Justice League is brewing up all the more to keep Christian Bale, idk why we keep trying to make our super heroes younger every time we depict a group team movie they were all old or relatively around eachothers the same age. Who wants to see a bunch of teeny bopper super heroes?

@JeffLaptew  What would not be a bad idea is JGL taking the mantle in Gotham while Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) teams with the justice league. To me this is brilliant. Bruce partaking with worldly disasters while Levitt keeps the streets clean in Gotham. Win win! Just my opinion, Im sure there are other great ideas from us fans!

If this news is true then you can add another flop to the DC list. Nothing against JGL because he's a good actor but TDK series batman cannot be attached to The Justice League. Marvel has lots more going for them....better movies and better characters. If DC was smart they would not give an ounce of thought to this rumor and make Superman the start of their Movieverse and then do solo movies for the rest after Justice League. With good writing it could work.

What about Christian Bale came back as Batman and unite with Gordon-Levitt as Robin ?

For one, JGL was not "Robin" in TDKR. His name was Robin. I think it was meant to be somewhat of an easter egg. I think it would be nice to see Christian Bale come back as Bruce Wayne, but not as Batman. He could be a mentor to the new Batman, like the Batman Beyond series. Nightwing would be cool, but I would rather see him in his own movie. Besides, Nightwing eventually does take over and becomes Batman in the comics. I'm a DC fan and I'm worried they are going to rush this and do it wrong. If they want to compete with the Avengers, they need to be different and continue with a more serious, gritty tone. Not a bunch of one-liners. Don't get me wrong, I liked the Avengers. I just want Justice League to be different. I think they are going to drop a bombshell within the next year. It wouldn't surprise me if Christian Bale came back as Batman. WB needs to do something big with this... and you can't get much bigger than that.

As soon as I saw the ending I knew Joseph would make a perfect nightwing.  I say add nightwing instead of batman to the justice league, it would be an interesting twist.
