Yann Martel’s best-selling novel is the story of a boy who gets shipwrecked on a boat with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker — sort of. Of course, there’s so much more to the story than that. It remains to be seen how Brokeback Mountain director Ang Lee will handle the narrative, but if the first trailer is any indication, the movie is going to be gorgeous. The preview shows the shipwreck that separates protagonist Piscine “Pi” Patel’s (Suraj Sharma) from his family — who are moving their zoo overseas — and leaves him stranded in the ocean. The green-tinted whale at the end of the tailer will take your breath away. Do you think Lee can pull off the emotional punch of the book?

Life of Pi, Lee’s first 3-D film, will hit theaters Nov. 21.
