There’s not much to judge in the new trailer for the Summer 2013 Superman flick Man of Steel, from director Zack Snyder and producer Christopher Nolan. We’ve got our Clark Kent, played by Henry Cavill (of The Tudors), working on a fishing boat and hitchhiking…and flying. Flying really, really high. In a cape. What else could you ask for?

But let’s examine the details. There are, in fact, two different teaser trailers to study. Above, we’ve got the voice of Kevin Costner, who plays Clark Kent’s adoptive father Jonathan. Below, the voiceover is from Russell Crowe, who plays Jor-El, the biological father of Kal-El (Superman’s name on Krypton). The two trailers both boast dark colors, lots of wind and music straight out of The Secret of Roan Inish—rather than the primary colors and John-Williams-style soundtrack of the Lois and Clark era. Even without a look at Metropolis, the Daily Planet or Amy Adams as Lois Lane, that’s enough to get any comics-movie fan at least interested (if not yet psyched) for a very new take on the Kansas-raised hero.
