How scarce were good Broadway musicals this year? For an opening number, the Tony show had to turn to last year’s Tony winner, The Book of Mormon. Two of the four nominees for Best Musical Score were actually plays (One Man, Two Guvnors and Peter and the Starcatcher), not musicals. And the evening’s big winner — with eight awards, including Best Musical — was the earnest but overrated little show Once, whose score was transposed entirely from the (much better) Irish movie on which it was based.
